I recorded this and didn't do much to it except a little eq and compression. Anything I did WRONG?

Bass is lacking definition -- it kind of just booms along....... some timing issues on the drums....... the whole mix sounds murky and has a woolly sound - like a blanket thrown over the speakers....... as well - there is no depth to the mix elements - the tracks sound like reverb was added to them, instead of sounding like they were played in an ambient space......

Needs a re-mix, IMO..........

Oh yeah, I also put fake reverb on the tracks in addition to the eq and compression. Are you trying to say that if I wasn't a dumbass I could make fake reverb sound like a real ambient space? Or should I haul my stuff to a church to record? I use SIR and it has like, no paramaters to edit; thats what it sounds like. I'll take any EQ tips, but I think most of the sound comes from my guitars and amps and fake amps and I don't want to slaughter it with eq just to change the sound, because I can't change it all that much at the source.

sounded like the snare chains could use a little tightening imo.
the bass guitar could use a good bump in the 60hz region/ maybe a 70hz bump in the bass drum..If at all possible i would be nice to decrease the DECAY on that snare verb.

guitars seemed a little too dry, maybe try some long and subtle delay if you got it.

peace.

ps, this sounds like a video game ive played. i LOVE the nostalgia! :)

What I was saying was that there are a number of problems with the mix and overall sound quality. If you want to improve it, you should note my suggestions.... OR.... you can leave it the way it is and let it sound like ass! :p

If you don't actually want a critique, why do you ask for one????

Awesome song...

I'd suggest using everyone else's advice if you want it to sound better.

How did YOU record this?
What instruments did YOU play?....

I think you are passing someone else's work off as your own....

I could be wrong....but I don't think so.

Well...yeah he definitely took it from an N64 game. Still cool though. I like the overall song really. I think there are a lot of harsh comments about it though. I've heard a lot worse from people on this site. I'd agree with xfinsterx's suggestions about the bass and the drums. Bass drum needs a little better sound. It sounds just like a slap right now. Around 3:37 there is also this guitar noise when they're fading out. Kind of sounds like a guitar amp turning off...but not. It might just be some fret or pickup noise. Again, I'm listening through my headphone which bring out A LOT of impurities in a song. Also cut out that huge gap at the end. There is like 15 sec. of silence... i don't think you need it. I think it would also be cool if you blended the drums in the background. Made them distant, but still a part of the band. Especially in the slow section. The snare is a little overpowering right now. I like the nostalgia too....brings me back to the good ol' days sitting and playing N64 games until my fingers bled.

Its pretty obviously a medley of Zelda songs, and I tagged Nintendo and Koji Kondo's copyright in the mp3. Everything else is me though. I trascribed the orchestrated songs for guitar, wrote them into a medlely, and then played all the instruments. It was for a contest.

I don't disagree with any comments on the song, I know its not perfect because I really didn't do much to it because I was afraid of messing it up.

About the reverb; is Blue Bear saying that it should be possible to get a natural ambient sound out of SIR instead of a fake reverb sound, or is that just the sound of cheap software reverb? I tried increasing the wet/dry and pre delay settings, but it always sounded muddy. I eventually went with some light hall reverb with a short pre delay so it wouldn't consume the mix in mud and echoes.

Poor reverbs tend to sit on top of the tracks you use them on, rather than blend with it.

I've always been impressed by your game covers, Seifer. I still have your Megaman covers, heh. The best part, in my opinion, is when you briefly go into the Zelda: A Link to the Past's "Lost Woods" theme. I did a cover of that years ago, myself.

As for the mix, I think the guitars sound great. They always sound good in your mixes. I like the ambience in this a lot. This would be much better if you found a way to record drums instead of samples, though.
