I have a shure SM57 for vocals and instruments.

I would like to buy another mic...mainly because my fostex FD-4 can record two tracks at once and i could get a better sound recording my drums with two mics.

I need something like the SM57.

The stores around me(except one) dont carry them, and they are always touting an aduio-techinca mic in place of it. dont remember what model though.

in order to get another sm57 i will have to drive 30-45 minutes to the nearest guitar center, or go to the place thats five minutes away and spend $20 dollars more.

is there something as good in the price range($80) as the sm57?

should i get something that caters more to either vocals or instruments instead of both?

any help will be greatly appreciated

PS- i dont have a mic pre-amp or phantom power

if you wanna record a drum set with two mics, and one of them is gonna be a sm57, id think about going with a condenser (if you have phantom power).....SamAsh has the Marshall MXLv67 for $89 and it is awesome for vocals and would make a great drum overhead mic.....you could use the sm57 for the kick drum and the v67 overhead capturing the rest of the kit......

What should i buy next?

A book titled...

"How to Avoid Gear Lust!" by Mike More ;)

Also know as "Singing in the shower... and loving it!"

Bob, just break out $80 and start driving.-Richie

Drumset with 2 mics including the SM57 ?

I would set the SM57 on the kick and use a condenser as mono overhead. If you use omni, you'd also get some room sound which can be good or bad.

I've recorded drumsets with 1 mic and more and as soon as you expand to a second mic, a kick mik is a must, cuz thats the main problem when doing only one mic. Look at it this way, you wont have any problems with phase cancellation.

Buy some coveralls and a give drawing desk. Then get to work.

ummmm...ok???

thanks to everyone for helping me out....

i wish i had phantom power do i could get a condenser

i should have also mention i am on a tight budget..so i wont be able to get any kind of drum mic and mixing board ETC.

i think i would just play it safe and get another SM57

If you dont have phantom, try out a dynamic omni as overhead, instead of another SM57. Though you cant never have too many 57:s.

thanks...can someone point me the way to a good dynamic omni about the same price as the SM57?

thanks in advance

Get three! For $60 you can snag three Samson R11 microphones. They are a bit more hollow than a 57, but they are decent mics nonetheless.
