What should I be looking for in an Interface?

I hope to be investing in some audio equipment soon. Money is definitely a factor but I'm not sure what qualities to look for. The only interface I have used is the Yamaha Audiogram I borrowed from my singer. I'll be recording metal guitars and vocals. Drums aren't likely at this point. I'm still undecided about whether I should be trying amp micing or just virtual amps for convenience. If there's any information I should be giving that I overlooked let me know. Any information on what I should be looking for helps. I'm running Cubase on my Windows Vista laptop.

Obviously it has to be able to interface with your DAW, and... no... S/PDIF isn't the best option. Past that are you going to mix 'in the box', or do you need faders? How many inputs do you need? Do you need preamps on the inputs? Phantom power on the preamps? Are the preamps considered solid? Are the ADA converters considered solid? What is the warranty? How easy is it to actually take advantage of the warranty if you need to?

The Yamaha n8 is a mixer, interface, and Cubase control surface all rolled into one though it may be too rich for your blood.

Plan for what your needs are now, as well as the future. There is a guy selling his Tascam US 1641 for $200 here.
