I'm thinking of getting another mic, and would like if you all could provide some suggestions as to which mic(s) would be a logical choice to round out the small collection I already have.

Here's what I've got so far...

SP C1 & B3

Shure Beta 57 & 58, SM 57

(2) Senn e609's (Originals)

Music being recorded will vary from acoustical to hard rock.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!!

Rick

probably an SDC, like the MXL 603 or Oktava MK012? This would maybe improve the acoustic stuff, although the SP mics you own may be just fine for it....dunno....

just a thought...

Stan.

my vote would be for a bass instrument mic

sennheiser mk421

in no perticular order.

a sdc seems like a ok idea, but you have nothing for bass instruments, kik etc

Just taking a stab in the dark here...

but you don't have any sdc's on the list. Are you planning on recording any live drums or bass? If so, I would think you'd want to look inthe areas of sdc's for drum oh as well as acoustic guitar, and a bass/bass drum mic. Or I could be way off. Others might think you need a better main vocal mic. Are you happy with the results you're getting from your vocal mic(s)? Or how about a tube mic? I know I don't have any answers here, just trying to help the process along by asking pertinent questions. Now I'll sit back and listen.

Oh, yeah

everybody posts while I'm writing mine. Make me look like an idiot. Oh, wait, I guess I did that. Never mind.

Pair of SDs. Oktavas, MXL603s, Rode NT5, SP C4 should fit in your budget.

I'd get an Electrovoice RE-20, a pair of Russian Oktava MC-012s, and a Groove Tubes tube mic. Whichever one you can afford; they're all pretty good mics.

That's just what I'd do.

What is it that you record and say "I wish I had a better mic"? Maybe electric guitar, or vocals, drums...what sounds great to you in your opinion and what could be better?

I was thinking along the lines of a Bass/bass drum mic as well, but I wasn't sure....

Vocals - Happy, ...I don't know, I've not actually used the ones that I have yet as I don't have everything set up here. I'm supposed to hook up my Delta 1010 this week end.......hopefully! Right now for live applications I use the Beta 58...it's been working pretty good for me, that or a plain ol' 57.

I purchased the C1 for my vocals as I have more of a monotone voice. When ever I play out I end up having the sound guys really push the high end in my voice to get it "crispy".

I will be recording Drums as I've got a crappy used set coming this weekend as well.

I will be recording a miced bass amp as well as a direct bass line as well.....but I figured the 57's or the e609's would work for that as well as micing guitar cabs (yes / no)

Budget: Hmmm...I'd like to stay at 200 bucks or below (I'm not opposed to used from ebay. :) )

Thanks for all the replies so far!! This gives me some things to start thinking about that's for sure!

Rick
