Is anyone else using Audacity? I'm using it because it's free, and it records fine, but I'm not satisfied.

The effects don't seem to react in "real-tme". For example, I select a track, apply an effect, wait a few seconds and then see how it sounds. Further, Audacity's interface seems awkward. I want to be able to just turn knobs and hear how it sounds!

Can anyone recommend a solution? Perhaps there's better software at a reasonable price. Or maybe I don't have Audacity set up properly.

Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 - $70 online.

Ardour, anyone? Actually quite solid piece of work. But it's not going to get me off the Sonar bandwagon anytime soon...

It would definitely be great for someone that's looking for a digital tape machine in a box. Me, I need my MIDI! :)

You didn't say what platform you were running Audacity under - Windows or Linux?

If Linux, head for http://linux-sound.org/

I'm using the PlanetCCRMA audio bundle on the Red Hat 9 distribution of Linux.

Mixers, multitrackers, softsynths, sequencers, audio editors, FX plugins, and virtual patchbays to link them all together.

Every scrap of software is Open Source, and can give results every bit as good as commercial stuff under Windows.

To hear the results, try

Thanks for the good responses! I downloaded Kristal and it's what I was looking for.

I'm on Windows XP, maybe Audacity works better on Linux. I've been meaning to shift to Linux, I even downloaded Mandrake, but I just haven't had the time or guts to install it.

Thanks for the good responses! I downloaded Kristal and test drove it for a couple hours. I think it'll work well, I like the mixer feel already.

I'm on Windows XP. I'd like to switch to Linux, and I even downloaded Mandrake recently, but haven't jumped in yet.

It's not free but I used to use PowerTracks by pgmusic back when I used it the price was only $29 now I believe it's $49 Still a great deal.
