What program to record real-time loop overdubbing?

Bit of a confusing title I know, but a really simple idea that I want to be able to perform - I want a program whereby you hit record and it starts recording, then when you hit another button it goes back to the beginning but carries on recording in overdub mode, and then carries on looping like this until you tell it to stop.

This can be done to some extent using Cubase/Cubasis, where you set the Left and Right markers, press record and tell it to loop when it hits the right marker... but I can never seem to be able to set these programs up so that they actually record what I'm playing in (through either mic input or line input) - no matter what settings I use, it never seems to get an input signal.

Basically I'd like someone to either suggest a program that does this, or tell me how to get Cubase to actually work.

If I am understanding correctly...

Sound Forge has an option to automatically open a new track every time you hit record.

It basically just creates a new file at the default (or previous) settings (i.e. stereo/mono, sample rate, etc.)

But if your are talking about building layer upon layer upon layer where the program keeps looping and also playing back the just recorded tracks.....I'm not sure about that.

If you have to hit the button to start and stop the tracks anyway, its really only 3 mouse clicks away from dis-arming the just-recorded track and arming a new track and hitting REC again.

You would just set up a bunch of tracks ahead of time as to record from the same input an such.

I've just been doing this over the last few days working on multi-layer vocal harmonies in Cool Edit Pro as an excercise to learn about that process and to learn the sound(s) and limitations of a new piece of rack gear (a DBX 286A pre-amp).

The reason I wanted to be able to do it in realtime is because I wanted to play my guitar into my PC, then do a kind of one man band thing (similar to Howie Day, but using my laptop instead of the line6 sampler he uses) - thing the only solution is going to be to try and either get Cubase to actually work (God knows how) or to actually buy the device.

i ask a similar question not long ago about using vsti in real time with guitar and got no hits, may need to look elsewhere for info... donno...
