what program is the best for recording my music directly to my computer? also, is there a really good mic to do this with?

What's your budget, and your type of computer? Also, what are you recording? How serious are you about quality recording?

Everything is the best. All mics are the best.

That was easy.

A Protools Rig :20 000$ (With Apogee converters)
A Manley VoxBox - 4000$
AKG C12 microphone: 6000$

Don't know if it is the best, but it's damn close...

Cheapest:
Audacity: Free
Shure SM58: 100$
M-audio fast track sound card with built in preamp: 150$

Windows sound recorder. Plug in a pair of earbuds to use as a mic and you're ready to go!

That will probably produce some real pro sounding "telephone" effect huh? :D

I guess I will tell you what I think/hope the best is:

Sonar V-Studio with a pair of KRK VXT 8's, a Rode NTK, and a GT Supre.

Or...

Sonar Producer 8, BLUE Bluebird, Echo AudioFire8

Or...

Neumann TLM 103, Solid State Logic XLogic X-Rack 8 Dynamics Modules, Sonar V-Studio, Waves Mercury, UA UAD-QUAD (full), ADAM P22A pair, UA LA 1176.

That should be a good starting point. :D

Steinberb Nuendo

Steinberg Nuendo is a really nice multi-track program or Wavelab is nice too, but its only for stereo recording/mastering.

All audio programs are pretty comparable. They differ in how they deal with things, and some offer more features than others. There are many that you can download for free to get you started.

Samplitude is still my favorite, no matter how many times i try and use other programs they just upset me. Samplitudes interface is very logical.
