Hey upperlip... forget what I said. I'm not in the position to reccommend a preamp to anybody. Sorry if I took this thread out to left field.

I'm looking into picking up a preamp, and have been considering the Toft ATC-2. I've read Fletchers review several times and all the wacked out comments on the Harmony Central thread (several times). I understand perfectly well what Fletcher was saying in his review, and it sounds as if the Toft unit would be a sweet unit for the home/project studio, which is my use. In fact it's probably seriously overkill, but I have a hard time spending my money on crap, and I'd rather spend it on something I'm going to be happy with and adds the flexibility that the Toft brings with the usable EQ and compression.

In fact I had picked up a Focusrite Voicemaster Platinum, but sent it back deciding that I might as well spend the extra few hundred and pick up a keeper.

There's been virtually no noise (talk) on the Toft though over the past year. Any current thoughts from anyone or what might make a better complete unit (Pre, Compressor, EQ) in the $1000 range? Or less if there's a killer deal I'm not thinking of.

Hey Krag,

Had to laugh when I read your last post -- I also bought the VoiceMaster Pro and sent it back a few days later. I was really turned off by its cheesy construction and stupid faceplate design. It looked and felt like a toy. Who needs that kind of crap? Better to hold out for the real deal.

The Toft ATC-2 is looking like a good option as a solid front end to a DAW. Did you buy it? If not, what did you get?

I own and use the Seventh Circle Audio N72's and J99's (www.seventhcircleaudio.com) as well as the Toft ATC-2. I bought the Toft more for the eq and compressor than the preamps, but they're decent and clean, along the lines of the Grace stuff. They work nicely on stuff that likes a clean pre, like Acoustic Guitar, though I tend to favor my Peavey tube preamp on most acous. gtrs.

The SCA preamps (particularly the J99 with the Hardy 990c opamps and Jensen trannys) are outstanding. First time I heard them it was the same sensation as having a bag taken off your head so you can hear more.
