I just started a thread on effects and while Im here... I own a mesa triple rectifier with a rectifier 4x12 cab. I am into playing what would be described as "nu-metal"(think Korn,Slipknot, limb bizkit...) I am wondering what kind of preamp I should mic this cabinet with for these sounds. I was going to order a grace 101 or a modified ADA mp-1 from voodooamps.com. Does anybody have some suggestions to get that "nu-metal" tone(at least as far as preamps go) any help would be appriciated!

No preamp will make it more of anything interms of style. It might make it more muddy or more bright, but that will depend on the room more than the pre.

I think the better question would be which pre will most accurately portray you amps sound. That is just something you have to find out by using them. This is one of the few areas Guitar Center shines because they have a 30 day trial period.

But I think you might find that the "numetal" tone comes most from double tracking.

I am refering to mic preamps, if you are trying to find a preamp to use infront of your amp for distortion, disreguard everything I said.

The ADA looks like a guitar preamp.

The Grace is a mic pre.

What kind of mics do you have???

I have md421's and sm57's I am in the market for a mic pre I figure...the ada seems like it would work though, just like 9/10 of these type of questions are answered, I think I have to go to guitar center and buy a few and do a "shootout" I was just figuring somebody might have known what kind of mic preamp's these types of band use more or less but I am sure they use a wide variety, I do appriciate the help

No it will not. That is designed to go into a power amp. It is like the preamp section of your Mesa. You plug a guitar into it and it makes distortion. Then you plug it into a power amp. It is by no means a mic preamp.

dont I feel like an idiot. Iv been doin this for a while and I still get mic pre and guitar preamp mixed up, I belong in noob jail. thank you for the correction

Well *technically* on the most basic level, they do almost the same thing: boost the level of the input; however, as I'm sure you just figured out, a guitar pre-amp is used to modify the sound more than amplify it, whereas a mic pre is used to increase the level from mic level to line level. Obviously, it affects the tone as well, but that's not technically it's primary purpose.

That said, nu-metal tone is largely based on the tone of the amp itself. A fair amount of distortion, and many layers. Nu-Metal is more about the style of the music than about the tone.

P.S. Message me if you ever want to get into real metal man :D I used to be into Slipknot/Mudvayne/Korn/Staind/etc. but I've found a whole different better world, and I can't believe I ever liked those bands! Just a thought for ya when you're ready :)
