I have jumped into this over my head and I am sinking fast.

I recently purchased a M-Audio firewire solo to go with my laptop and I got it home and I installed all the good stuff that comes with it, but now I don't know what to do with it. I don't have any kind of recording software on my computer so maybe I need some of that good stuff to get started. If that is it, then how do I know that the software that I will purchase (in the near future) is compatible with the hardware that I already have? What kind do you recommend?? and Is this what I am supposed to do next???

Thanks in advance,
~Lauren

Some kind of interface didn't come with it? It really depends on what you're trying to do. You can download ntrack for free somewhere that you can do you're tracking and mixing on. I'd do that and throw the money on a couple good mics.

The Firewire Solo didn't come with any recording software? Usually there's something bundled with interfaces these days, even if it's a demo or "lite" version.

The best way to insure hardware capability is to check the software makers web site. They usually give you a clue under minimun system or hardware requirements. I would also see if there is a demo of the software. If so, download it and play around for 30 days. I use a MAC so I can only suggest what many Apple users are running: Digital Performer, Logic, or Logic Express.

So I found the users guide and I know what I am doing now. I also downloaded n-track for a while and that is working well for me. So, thank you for your suggestions and for your help. I appreciate it.
