I am a singer songwriter with the following equipment.
Fostex VF16, Line6 Pod, Sure SM58, Tascam Drum Machine, Various guitars and basses.

I am keen to expand on my home studio and have a PC which I would like to use to help create music, but I am totally lost as to the best way to do this. I would love to be able to add some more contemporary sounds to my arrangements, and have bought some magazines specialising in recording, but there is too much gear to take in. Any Suggestions?

Any books you could recomend for newbies would also be great!

I would recomend a software sequencing program like Logic and a sound module or sampler.I have a Roland JV1010 sound module and Logic Silver and it is "locked up" to my Roland 1880.You can sync up your Fostex to it and your drum machine and have a lot of power.

Monty,

Thanks For That

Can the sound module be controlled by the sequencer. Might sound like an obvious question, but I am absolutely new to this area of music, and have absolutely no keyboard skills.

Yes the module is controled by the sequencer. There are many different kinds of sequencers in both the software and the hardware (stand alone) variety.I like the software type myself but it is a much argued and personal preference.

A module with the GM (General Midi) logo on it is multi tembral. That means that it can play 16 or more different parts or tracks at one time!It is a very powerful studio tool.

As far as being able to play a keyboard, that is the beauty of a sequencer. You can slow down the tempo to a crawl to play your part, or you can enter the notes with a mouse on an edit screen or you can use your computer keyboard to enter the data.

Sequencing with Midi is not that difficult once you get started.I would recomend going to a good music store and get a demonstration or go to a studio. Then maybe by a book there are several out there I just cant remember the name of one right now.

Monty,

Dave, there is a good websiite at www.artistpro.com there are a lot of books and videos there as well as a free recording course by Bill Gibson and it has alot of info on Midi and sequencing.
