Hello,
This is my first post on these boards so bare with me.
I am slowly building a home studio to enhance/improve and sometimes completely mess up recordings I do in other studios with my band. Despite the fact that I've got some great tracks from these studios, money is quickly becoming an issue. With our album almost complete, there are many touchups we’d like to add and some things we'd like to alter. I've decided to try and perform this myself and have thus far been semi-successful. I’ve been casually recording at home for around 3 years and have some limited experience. Just seems the money could be better spent buying actual equipment versus “time” in a studio at this point in our project. The music we’re recording can best be described as boogie-woogie rockin’ blues. I play the piano….unfortunately almost entirely from a digital stage piano. We do a lot of Jerry Lee Lewis style boogie/rock. Also a lot of blues…styles vary between BB king and some old Stones/Eric Clapton British style blues-rock.

Equipment currently owned and being used:

Echo Layla 20bit (rarely used)...usually just adding one track at a time. Though may be used more in the near future.
Echo Mia 24bit
Mackie cfx16 Mixer
Audio Technica AT4033 (Mic we use almost exclusivley. For vocals, acoustic guitars, percussion, etc.)
Audio Technica AT4051 (Can't seem to figure out what I can do with this mic. Was giving to me by my drummer. It costs more than the 4033 but sounds really “dull” compared to the 4033?)
Shure Beta 58
Cool Edit Pro 2.1

So what now? I have roughly 2k to spend. I’m thinking of buying a good mic pre and another mic. The vocals I’m recording with the 4033 seem too bright…”not warm.”
I’ve heard good things about the Joe Meek VC6Q British Channel, and also the ADK tube mics….been told these products could help warm up our sound. But for the price, and in your opinions of course, is there a better combination/choice? Am I missing something in the chain? Right now I’m doing all my EQ, compression, enhancing, effects, with software. Particulary WAVES platinum and Izotope Ozone.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/criticisms/opinions from anyone on these forums. It’s getting down to crunch time and I don’t have a lot of time to waste running around trying out tons of products…so I’m trying to narrow it down to just a few I should look at. I hope you can help.

Thanks,
Vic

A. You could try putting a little high shelf on the 4051 for your vocals. Brighten up a mic that's too warm...

B. Let's just say that I have no comment on Izotope Ozone...

C. PSP PianoVerb (FREE!) can do wonders for your digital piano.

D. I really can't make any "specific" preamp & mic recommendations - So many flavors, so little time. Test everything you can in your price range and pick your favorite.

E. Make sure that you get your project properly mastered (Well? What do you expect me to say?).

LoL. Understandable. Thanks for the advice.
I can see why you would not be fond of Izotope Ozone. From what I've heard from both local and national labels, the mastering I'm achieving with Izotope will get me by for now. Though, I am interested in seeing what an engineer with professional equipment could do to the same mixes. I'd like to compare the two. So far all I have is other CDs to compare to.
Cool ,
Thanks. Maybe I'll give your company a shot. I'll check out the website for details. =)

What problem are you needing to fix? I would save the money for mixing and mastering in a real studio. You already have enough to lay down some overdubs.

Thanks for your replies! =)

Ok..I've used both mic’s for about 2 months now on both acoustic and electric guitars. I usually put the 4051 near the neck and the 4033 near the sound hole. I get an "ok" sound, but sometimes I end up scratching the 4051 track for sounding to dull and mushy. I read up on mic’ing techniques and I’ve got a couple differing things I’m going to try hear in the coming weeks. When mic'ing an amp, I've been using the 4033 exclusively. I’m going to purchase a sm57 here soon…I’ve been told these are not only good live mic’s but also can serve well inside the studio. Sax is much like vocals...the 4033 is doing an ok job.
My problem is this...compared to the studios I'm getting my base tracks from...my recordings sound to brittle and light. I can do some EQ'ing and compression to try and make up for it but it still doesn't sound as good as I think it could. I'm guessing this is because the studios are using large tape machines on a million dollar board..as well as Neumann mic's, awesome pre's, and all that jaz. I'm not so much "disappointed" in the tracks I'm recording at home, as I am eager to find the products or techniques that will help me improve on what I'm doing. I of course understand that I’m not going to achieve the same sound as I am in the studios…but I think I can do better.
One other thing to add is that I’m not going to be living near these studios for much longer..so I hope to eventually become self sustainable in the recording realm.

I’ve been reading about ADAT’s. I’m currently using my Mackie mixer into echo layla/mia sound cards. Would the ADAT give me a richer, more profesional sound?

Ok. Thanks guys!!!
:D

Yeah. Well that was my thought. For the money, is there a warmer more professional sounding pre-amp than the Joe Meek VC6Q British Channel? I know that this is all personal taste...but please lend your opinions. =)
