What (musical) direction should we take?

We now have done three VERY different versions of one of our songs.

Have a listen and let us know what you think in terms of the musical direction we would be better heading off in, or indeed if the versions are any good!

I'd be very happy to listen, but soundclick is a total pisser, what with registration, popups and all. Many folk here use www.nowhereradio.com, which is totally hassle free and Waldo who runs it is a big friend of this community. You can post your MP3's there very easily, and you'll get more listens from people here.

Also (if this were a conversation and not a bbs post you'd see I'm not being arsey) asking people to listen to three different versons is, sort of, a lot. Point us to one and then get a dialogue about directions from there.

I promise to listen and comment if you put it up on nowhere.

It's cool that you recorded such different versions of the same song. I'd be interested in knowing which one YOU like the best.
Because after all it's your tune and ultimately you have to decide what musical direction you wanna take.

I really like the acoustic version. Has sort of a 70's vibe, probably because of the flute, and reverb on the voice sounds kinda retro.
Reminds me of ELP.

The re-make is definitely more marketable. Sounds more current.

Probably the last thing you want to do is yet another version of the song. But if I were producing this tune I would go for a hybrid of the acoustic version and the rocked up version. Trying to incorporate some of the acoustic sound into the harder rock version. Maybe keeping it sparser in the verses and then bringing in the drums and more rhythmic parts in the chorus.

Personally, I'd throw the synth version out the window, but that's probably just my bias against synths.

I enjoyed listening. Thanks for sharing.

i'd say in bruce springsteen or bob dylan style, record the different versions and when you get big you can release the ones on different "rarities albums" and charge he fans big bucks. or maybe only perform the other versions live. then again i didn't listen to any of them mainly because im currently using my air force recruiters computer and can't download anything onto it

Unless I'm mistaken, Nowhere Radio is no longer accepting free signups, which I think is part of the reason you see a lot more links to soundclick.

I would go with the acoustic version but even that needs abit of arrangement work and less processing and effects. Shorten the intro as well A&R with hit the next button long before the vocal line comes in.

The band i am in we hardly ever play the same thing twice in a song. We are kinda a jam band but we all come from a jazz teaching background pretty much. If you guys have good communication skills during live play, and have a good understanding of comping and good improv skills, mix it up, let the music take itself in the direction that sounds good. Music is Expressive maybe play it to go with how u are feeling. I prolly only making sense to myself but if it helped at all that would be coolsness.
 
personally i thought the original (acoustic) version was far and away the best. yeah it is kind of 70s. i liked the rock remake as well though. they both remind me a bit of New Zealand "drone" bands from the 70s and 80s like the Verlaines, if you've heard of them (and "drone" is not a bad thing).

liked the song itself heaps and the multiple vocals really adds to the sound. only thing I'd change about the acoustic version is the flute seems a litttle too loud and kind of grates later into the song because of this. or maybe its just cos i got a bit of a headache. anyways, not trying to nit-pick, just offering an opinion.

i like the long intro too - it suits the rest of the song - screw A and R :)
 
Thanks to all of you that have listened to, or downloaded, our music.

It's been a while since this post was started & in that time alot has happened.

Firstly... we have put lots of new songs on Soundclick.

Secondly...
We have had record company interest in our music!!!

Most want to release the songs "as is", as they're happy with our production and believe our songs are marketable... and we obviously want to retain a fair bit of "artistic control".


So... should we now go for a CD single (probably one of our versions of Cold Fire), or put out an album?

We would be VERY interested in your serious thoughts & views.
