I currently use a tascam 414 portastudio connected to my pc with an audiophile 24/96. I will soon be buying a new mixer, either 16 or 24 channel. I don't know much about mixers, and would like to hear any suggestions on what not to buy / what to buy and things to look out for when buying a new mixer. It will be used for recording a drum kit, bass, guitar and vocals.

If you plan on having the mixer around for more than a year or so, I'd recommend anything but Behringer. Although it may work, and it's cheap, most likely it won't last. Mackie has a decent sound, they last long but the EQs are weak. Allen and Heath has a great EQ, but I found a little more noise as compared to the Mackie (but I've heard otherwise). At least, that's what I've found. I'm playing with the cheap Midas now, and that's great. But it's a little more money than the average.

If you already do not have the interface to match 16-24 I/Os then take a look at this one http://www.tascam.com/product_info.php?pid=343

If you have the I/O, then take a look at the Tascam DM24.

If you dont have the patients to learn a new digital mixer, then look elsewhere. LOL The DM24 requires a huge learning curve. It took me about 8 hours before I started customizing the DM24 the way I wanted it. and Im still finding this and that to add.

Good Luck

I use the Yamaha Mg12/4. These are very reasonably priced mixers, come with 6 preamps, 12 in 4 out plus inserts
