i own an at2020 condenser mic that i use to record hip hop vocals and i am looking to upgrade to something different!! the best advice i have found through friends and my best friend the computer is to buy a mic that sounds different. any suggestions on what i should or should NOT get? :p

PS---I suppose I need to clarify and define what I mean by microphones that sound “different.” You see, not all mics interpret sound the same way. Some emphasize the high mids, while others might have a bump in the low mid range. Some might roll off the low end while yet others have a high shelf to give that “airy” sound. The point is, not all mics do the same thing.

One that works well with your voice and you can afford. All the characteristics you're ascribing to mics that you think will make a difference can be achieved, if you wanted to, with EQ. They are not necessarily what makes a good mic or a good mic for your particular voice.

What's your budget? What's your style? Where does your voice sit, range-wise?

P.S. The answer to the budget question shouldn't be "Under $100"... even if it is, say something else... :D

Or to think about it another way, what do you not like about the mic that you currently have that you are hoping to fix buy purchasing another mic (not for under $100)

our budget is under $1000- their are 2 of us that use the mic, my voice is VERY high and i yell, and my friends is low- almost talking. we want to EXPAND our range of sound and experiment

you make a good point i think we want to achieve a cleaner sound- i understand a studio room and a quality mic are hand in hand but we need to start somewhere. budget of <$1000 lol i have the money right now to move up a league since i started working lol.

In the $1K range I really like the Neuman TLM 102, so much so I bought two of them. Clean sound very versatile, nice on vocals, guitars, as a room mic etc and will leave some budget left over for room treatment to make your sound even better
There are a lot of good options at that price point though and it'll come down to personal preference so YMMV

Check out THIS thread about a new microphone on the market. And follow the link in that 1st post to find out more about it - along with his other modified microphones. ;) Check out his whole website. :thumbs up:

Get the TLM 103 USED from Guitar center website, you'll save a lot of money and you can use it on just about everything. Also get A GRace preamp 1 channel used for about 300 and you'll be good to go.
