Hi im currently working on a band the singer is similuar to linkin parks singer but not as good. thing is i have a eureka mic pre and a MXL condensor and a distressor. Eureka is kinda dull sounding , im not sure if i should get a good mic pre i was thinking about the 6176 which has the 1176 with it. does anyone have any suggestions on getting the sound i want? Maybe the linkin park vocal is like a transparent avalon mic pre? anyways if someone could help me that would be great. thank you.

Do you think it might just be mainly the singer?

Seriously, that sounds like the issue.
Would he consider getting some vocal coaching to improve?

One odd thing I've learned is that when you get into a better singing groove,
it can change things like mic choice, etc. because the tonality changes as a result.

ya you're definitly right, what im mainly takling about is not the singing how good it is but the color of hte sound, is it transparent vocals or is it colored like a neve? compression type? you know that type of stuff i really like the sound of it . maybe you know?

The problem is this: Say you get all the equipment that Linkin Park used to record. Say you get the same engineer. Say its in the same space. But say you throw some other singer in front of the mic...your end result will not be Linkin Park. Are you trying to learn the difference between transparent and colored in a round about way? What is your objective?

ok we dont want the singer to sound like linkin park

ok we dont want the singer to sound like linkin park, www.invainmusic.com is hte singer with crappy recording, what can we do to get Closer to the linkinpark/papa roach sound? thats my question from recording u hear what equip what mic can we do to get closer to that sound. please help

Now, I am fairly new to this, but which linkin park guy are you trying to emulate - the rapper or the singer? It sounds to me like they both have some effects put on them, and layered vocals as well, There is actually a TON going on with their vocals. I never really paid attention before. Wow! It's a lot different to listen to things from the engineers perspective.

Really listen to them...I am klistening to "In the end". Maybe someone with more knowledge could explain everything that's going on there. IO am interested to know as well. It seems to me the posters above are atleast partially right...the mic and pre aren't really an issue, it seems to me its more in the production.

Well, you've got one of the finer compressors ever made. And in fact, I'd think the distressor on something similar to nuke mode would be able to get you the kind of squashed, yet articulate in-your-face modern vocal that you'll hear with a lot of bands like Linkin' Park.

I would definitely record dry in a dead space. You'll want the vocals as up-front as possible, so I'd take the room out of it as much as possible.

Now you mention that you're using an MXL condenser. I guess this is kind of where the red flag is for me. I probably wouldn't use a condenser for that kind of vocal, period. Especially something crappy like an mxl. It's just too aggressive, transienty and dynamic of a vocal styling. Remember, you're not recording Justin Timberlake here.

If it were me, I'd start by close-mic'ing the vox with an Electrovoice RE-20 . . . maybe a Shure SM-7 if that weren't available. That, to me, would be a good starting point. I've never heard of your Eureka mic pre, but if it's of the colored variety i.e. API, then I'd try slamming it good and seeing what happens. If it works, then go with it. If not, then I'd back it off until it works for you.

From there, I'd set the distressor on something resembling Nuke mode, and just play with the attack time until you get some good punch out of the beginnings of your words . . . but not too dynamic so as to cause a lot of peaking.

1176?

Well im thinking of getting a vintech of a neve type pre and a 1176 , do u think the 1176 will give me more of a bite then then distressor?i got a rode ntk tube mic too

eureka mic pre is from presonus, i think maybe the mic is oneo f the main probs.

Vintech would be a nice option..The Distressor will do the job..Ditch the mic!!Those mics tend to sound small and "fold" under any db's, a singer of that type tend to get rather loud, makeing those type of mics less than ideal..Also nails on a chalkboard with their resonate feq. ..This is all IMHO..Good luck
