I like the idea of DIY. Can anyone recommened where to buy some cable and connectors? Assuming all I need is a soldering iron and screwdriver? (I can solder well.) I need to make a few long microphone cables as well as like 10 patch cables, etc. Guess I need a source for some TRS connectors as well. And a source for XLR and TSR patch panels.

Thanks,
James

markertek.com they have everything you need. get some nice mogami cable and neutrik connectors and you're set.

if you know how to solder then a mic cable is no different.

apply heat, add solder, remove heat, let cool. whats so difficult??

I vote Canare Star Quad cable and Neutrik connectors myself. I love how easy it is to put together a Neutrik end and they are built tought and the Canare is just good neutral sounding stuff. Just had another 300 feet of the stuff shipped from Markertek. Nothing better than rollin' your own cables with a beer and South Park.

Definitely don't buy cheap cables. If you spend the extra money, you won't be disappointed. Follow these guys advice on building your own. Or, if you don't want to make your own, at least invest in something of quality like a mogami cable or something of that caliber.

im actually looking to build some 1/4" patch cables, prob going the canare/neutrik route, but i have no idea what im doing...do you buy "mic cable" even though its going to a 1/4" connector? theres too many options...could someone give me an example of the exact cable and connectors they would buy for some high quality studio patch cables? that would be sweet

Yes for the mic cable, it has to be two conductor cable with a sheild for balanced connections.

Make it "Mogami" for me. I have 3 of them. Superb build with Neutrik ends. Ultimate noise rejection and low loss. Don't skimp. Get the best.....especially if you're recording with them.
