What kind of processor is the best for music recording?

What do you guys think about motherboards/processors? I'm bout to purchase a new motherboard and processor... WHAT KIND OF PROCESSOR DO YOU RECOMMEND? Athlon? Pentium? Duron/ Sempron?

I had an Athlon processor that was like 1.8Ghz and 1mb ddr ram... Now this processor to me worked a lot better then my other computer which has pentium 4 3.4Ghz 512 ddr ram... But the videocard might have attributed to the "faster" speeds for some reason...

What do ya think everyone?

Well, you left out the PowerPC Mac chip, but that's ok (I guess). ADM or Pentium should do the trick (either one is capable). As for clock speed, well why not get the fastest you can afford (they're fairly cheap nowadays). I'm a firm believer that RAM will make a huge difference. Especially if you use a ram-hog software (Like Windows XP).

yeah I think I figured that out with the computer i built that had 1gb... i was drooling how fast it was... plus i got a pretty good video card so that must have helped too... i love that thing... but now its time to build a new one...

gonna have 3gb of ram this time! fasho :)

think im gonna stick with AMD... but I still would liek to know everyones opinions or FACTS if possible...

I had a 1.8 Athlon with 1gig DDR that used to run about 16 tracks in cubase with limited plugs before stuttering...

I built a PIV 3.0 with 1gig DDR and that's run over 30 tracks withloads of plugs and plenty left under the hood. I'm gonna stick another gig in there though..... just for the hell of it

I still believe the intel chipsets are the most stable for audio so I'm staying with aSus & Intel for now

Well, if you're sticking to AMD, then you can't go wrong with the Athlon 64 or the new, dual-core Athlon 64 X2. BTW they're both socket 939 compatible, so if the X2 is too expensive for you, you can get the 64, and then upgrade.

Just stay away from the nVidia nForce4 chipset. Currently it's having some issues with realtime stuff such as audio. (although nForce3 is OK)

Stay away from the Sempron like the plague, it's basically the AMD equivalent of the Intel Celeron.

yeah i think I am gonna go with AMD... I used pentiums since I ever knew about, used, or owned computers... and i thought they were the best since they area offered with all dells, gateways, etc. for the most part...

I was traded a system from my bro wit a AMD... and I was astonished... upgraded the video card, 1 gig ram... and programs were whizzing around way faster it seemed... open, close, open, close... not any prolems... plus running dual montiors with that system... i think i can attribute that halfway to the video card... it wasnt the BEST... but it was like $130 I think or somewhere around there.... I like it anyway...

For a person who deals with graphics intensly and does music and is getting into music more... i just need to make sure i have a good system for both...

any other opinions... still interested...

oh thanks for that site by the way! thats crazy!!!!! hahaha so much to compare....

haha

Sempron is actually fine for a daw... the upper rated ones with the 256 kb L2 and socket 754. Some Semprons are Socket A -- not those. Socket A Sempron is only a little better than Athlon XP or Duron, while even Durons and XP's are quite capable. Remember the boom started when 350 to 500 mhz computers were the best we could get. There are high-rated Athlon 64's for socket 754 boards too, so you're not stuck with Sempron if you had a socket 754 board. Although I have an 8 in 8 out card & patch box, I haven't tried multi-mic recording such as a drumset with my Sempron 2800+. It's fine for usual one track at a time duty along with lots of playback tracks. I also have 1 gig DDR400 and a 10k scsi hard drive helping it all happen. So, with Athlon 64's, that's definitely comfortable daw territory.
