As an aside: Anyone know who Adres Segovia was??
I had the good fortune to win 2 tickets to see him play. I called an old friend who I knew would appreciate the experience. We didn't know where the seats were until performance night -- front row centre, less than 6 feet from where he sat on the stage! He was very old then (I think approaching 80).

As you say, he was amazing, even at his advanced age but at one point during a tune, he missed a couple of notes ... stopped playing, leaned forward and said, with a smile, to my ladyfriend, "Not everything works as well as it used to ... SOME things still do though!"

Throughout the rest of the night, he talked to both of us, between numbers, during the applause, as if we 3 were the only ones there.

Great night!

I think I've seen it called "Gitane". Django is teh shiznit.

He wasn't kidding either! When he died (at 90, wasn't it?), he had an eleven year old son.

Here, read this book.

I read the Dregni bio last year. It clears up many Django myths and goes into great detail about the Selmer-Maccaferri guitars, Django's Gibson years, the remarkable scene at Django's wartime club, the bizarre story of the second-best guitarist in Paris, Django's Manouche friend/arch-rival, "Baro" Ferret, etc., etc.

Check your local library.

There have been a few copies of that guitar... Think Selmer/ Maccaferri was the original.. Ibanez made a copy of it several years back and more recently Gitane with the D-500.. You can pick up a new Gitane D-500 for about $600.. Had my hands on a used one a few months ago in a shop, had very little use or wear and the were only wanting $400 with the case.. Was weird feeling and a little hard to play. It had a VERY wide nut .. Still thinking I shoulda jumped on it.. Coulda got used to the nut and string spacing.. Would be an excellent fingerstyle guitar..

Anyone remember Johnny Depp in Chocolat? That was really him playing. Not quite chops like this guy - but he did the Django thing and it was really good. Talented dude that Depp.

Segovia was universally regarded as being THE master of the guitar and to my knowledge he never really stopped playing but there was the "story" that some years before his death he had said that he was retiring from being the world's greatest guitarist..............no-one ever disputed his decision.

I memory serves me right, I believe that those Selmers also require a special string. You can string them with normal acoustic strings, but IIRC, there is a certain type of string that really brings out the best in these guitars.

I once read that Django started out as a violinist and changed to guitar when he was 18.
