What is your impression or experience w/ the Yamaha 01V mixer?

In spite of the your notion of 2 bad conversions the advantages are numerous. Unlike the 02R (we have 3 in the studio I work at) the 01V is well laid out for live. The fact that I don't have to carry a back breaking rack of processing is enough to sell me. I carry 4 channels of outboard pre's to give me 16 inputs as well as EQ's for FOH and monitors. From one console I can run a main mix, 4 monitor mixes and a variety of output options for recording. It handles this with ease. A big plus has also been not getting noise caused by outboard gear. I have not had a hum problem in the 2 years of owning it. Again anytime I can get anything remotely close to it but in a larger format I'm ready to write the check. I'm willing to spend up to 5k.
Keep in mind any tool is as good as the the person using it. It's not a Midas or anything close to any kind of top shelf live console in performance or price. 100K is way out of my league for a live console but I"m guessing you probably know that. I have no desire to return to analog although a DDA would be tempting for the right price. (except I'd have to lug it around) I've rented plenty of consoles for larger shows and due to rider issues. You have to hire 2 extra stage hands just haul them in and out.
As is always the case with these Chevy Vs Porche comparisons, expectations and scope is often overlooked. If enemy of the sun has a bigger budget he's not said so. His choices would seem to preclude so. If he went Mackie 24/8 and even a small amount of outboard gear he'll end up double the price of the 01V in a hurry. He'll get more channels,busses and less processing. Depends on where you want to trade off. After all that is the point. Everything has a trade off.
Any one who when asked for an opinion between Chevy and Ford, tells them they should forget about a car until they can afford a Rolls does no one a favor. I can fully accept that you dislike the Yamaha digital consoles. They wouldn't be my first choice either if there was something else better to choose from in this price class. Double even triple

Ive been seeing the tascam tmd1000 for only 400.00 here and there and I dont see one thousand dollars difference between the two myself. whats wrong with the tascam?

Absolutely nothing is wrong with the Tascam. The main difference is that it's a little short on mic pre's. That may work for you. Also a little less horse power in the processing dept. The 01V has dynamics on every channel, subgroup, buss and output.
Also keep in mind this model is discontinued so it's current price reflects that.

Ive used an 01V thousands of times, used to have one, then changed to 02R. now have 2 D8B's.
i dont like the 01V that much, not many channels. the 02R is great in my opinion, but there's a hell of a price difference between the 01V and the 02r, atleast inthe UK. the D8b is a bloody animal. the thing is gorgeous!!!...oh, it sounds great too!

I agree, the first experience I had with the D8B was the thing I did with Pete Bardens, which is on http:/www.mp3.com/pete_bardens It was also my first venture on anything but a mainframe console for many many years, and I really enjoyed it.

I have 2 MFX and 2 UFX cards. I tried Massenburg EQ and Drawmer dynamics on L-R ( for mastering - i think that this works only under latest RealTime OS, not sure ), but system is not yet installed in main studio, it is like " on display ".

I'm glad you guys are having this discussion...I was debating getting a D8B and HDR24/96 to go with my Mackie Monitors and I want to get an impression of what people are thinking of it...
esp. since I can currently find a used D8b from a reputable dealer for only 6000...with the DIO cards in it already... that's probably going to save me 2-3 grand...
Guys on prorec.com tried to suggest I look for something else, but if I want automation, I don't see any other easy way...How does all that stuff interact with automation...what do you need to get the faders moving on the D8B when the HDR24/96 is playing- time code? (sorry I'm not a killer time code/midi specialist...I've been using a Mackie 24x8 lately)

All you need is something like a JL Cooper Datasync II, which is under $300, and a couple of MIDI cables

Especialy if you can get the D8B at a good discount like that, you will have a very good combination which is really good fun to work on, and it sounds good as well.

Low end suggestions were the Spirit 328 (by Soundcraft) and the Panasonic Ramsa DA7 (by people who say they've A/B'd the two consoles) to a guy who says the only digital console he's seriously considering is the Sony DMX100 - but he's also waiting for new AES offerings in Sept..
Actually, I thought I could use the word clock in the D8B (or the card that comes with it) and hook that up to the HDR24/96- I seem to get the impression the solution was fairly internal without having to go to external stuff, but $300 and two midi cables are pretty friggen cheap.
And it would save me from outfitting my new recording studio with compressors (the 3630 isn't going to work for better recordings, but why blow $600 on four composer pros when the digital boards have them all built in? )

The Ramsa is a very good console for the money, but I'd still favor the D8B.
The Sony DMX is an awsome console. I have played with it 2x, and it really impressed me, it sets new standards for a "cheap" digital console. But it does cost $20.000
There is always better, and better invariably costs more money.

The added benefit is to have the combo console / recorder, which adds to system stability.
In your case I think the only discussion could be, do I want a console, or do I want a DAW. Once you made that choice, for the money, I think you have choosen the right gear.
