The Rode NT1-A?

I've seen some negative posts about it, and some positive.

Also, I plan on doing screaming vocals. Is this a good mic for it?

(I'm a beginner trying to find the best equipment within our budget.)

i tend not to reach for it now cos in my opinion, i have a better mic available for each job.

for screaming vocals, my inclination would be to reach for a big dynamic mic like an sm7b/re20/md421 or even the humble sm58.

it's a hell of a lot harder to over do it with a dynamic like that. it will withstand any screaming you can throw at it (within reason)

it all depends on the voice too, but i have found the nt1a to be too unnaturally bright/harsh on vocals.

there was a guy in the mp3 mixing section last week who sounded pretty good on vocals through an nt1a all the same,,but he was singing pretty gently.

I second the dynamic for screams.
They're not such sensitive fellows.
:D

+ another. SM7b specifically -- But you could certainly do worse than a 58 also.

The SM7 is out of our budget... The most I think we'd be able to spend is around 200...

Would the SM58 work...?

Note that I'm probably going to be running these mics through a Line 6 UX2.

The 58 wouldn't be a bad choice... But a larger diaphragm wouldn't hurt. Perhaps look at the Heil mics... The PR30 might be in your price range. A used 7b or RE20 might be right in that ballpark also...
