I was looking into purchasing a tube mic to add flavors to my setup and I was wondering what people's favorite tube mic(s) is(are) that they have tried and why? I figure most people will say that a certain mic is their favorite because it sounds good on their voice or whatever but if you could tell me what it adds/substracts to your voice, that would be pretty cool.

u67 no question. One of the most versatile and best sounding mics ever. For reals yo!

My favorite tube mic is the MXL V69M because it's the only tube mic I've ever had and I like the way it sounds.

Howzat?

I agree on the U67, the U47 isn't bad either. :D

But because I can't afford them I have to to it with the M149, which isn't too bad.

Røde NTK, but like many here, that's because it is the only tube mic I've ever used.

The Groove Tubes AM-40/GT-44 (same mic - different distributors and cosmetics) is a really good, low cost tube mic, especially for instrument applications. It's a MD, end address mic with roll off and pad. E-Bays for @$250 or so if you missed the GC $200 blowout last fall. At one time they retailed for something like $700. Wonderful on acoustic instruments.

If you can find the older MD1, MD2, MD3 series (and the "a" updates of these mics, they are well worth checking out. Noticeable tube compression, especially with the MD1. They predate the Alesis debacle and are high quality, industrial construction mics. You can swap out the tubes on these for NOS, unlike the newer GT mics where the tubes are soldered in place. There are fewer of these around but they come up on E-Bay every now and then.
