I guess I will, too. Damn. :)
What ARE we missing?
Sounds to me like your missing an SM57 or 2.
Missing, not missing out.;)
I'll have to try my MD441 on snare too.

Ahhhh I'll test my brand new used :) 441 as soon as it gets here! :)

My favorite is a Beyer 201 on top, another 201 on the bottom, combined with a 414TL or 414EB on the top. The top mics make up about 75-85% of the sound.

SM57 2 inches in and 2 inches up, pointed at the center of the head.

I use an AKG 880 and it does a nice job but I would probably use a SM57 if I had one!!!!!!

Hey guys, what's the difference between a SM57 and a Beta57? I once heard (I guess sonusman told me) that the capsule weighs less in the Beta, thus resulting in better transient response.......?

Any comments/experience reports on that are appreciated.

David.

beta 57 Frequency response: 50 to 16,000 Hz and a metal grille allows low-frequency proximity effect to enhance bass for close-up vocals (now I didn't say that did I?) , supercardioid.

sm 57 Frequency response: 40 to 15,000 Hz Cardioid (unidirectional) dynamic , The president uses one.

Doesn't he (the president) use two? At least they're using 2 for the White House press conferences.
But the real difference - that matters for snare drum recording - is that the polar pattern is different. Okay. I think the difference in freq. response is minimal. So what's up with the transient response?

The smaller diaphragm of the mic lends its self to better detail to cut through a mix, but a round or large diaphragm if very thin may also have better transient response,
a large diaphragm that is not very thin would give a rounder, full er sound. So I would think the sm57 would have a better transient response.?

Okay, slap me, shout at me, do whatever you like...

I just used the search function and discovered that I asked the same question sometime last year. Oh well, my brain has let me down again...:(

Snare Drum Mic

I used the sm57 but recently tried to a Groove Tubes AM40 through a Focusrite preamp. I cried.

[/size]The Beta also uses a Neodymium magnet system. Providing a larger level signal at output.

Sm 57 on the snare,on the hat side pointing down across the head into the drummers body.

Thanks Poddy.

BTW, I'm of course also using an SM57 on snare drum. Just curious about the Beta.
