Hi,

I was listening to a CD a friend gave me and noticed a short disco-esque break that's very interesting. It has a strange plastic character to it. Sounds like a heavy compressor but not exactly. Maybe you can help me understand what's going on there? Here it is:

Thanks!

It's just some synth "noise"...not a natural occuring sound.
You can probbably recreate it with most any decent syth these days. I have a few discs of that type of stuff in my old Akai S1000 library. That kind of stuff was very popular back in the late 80s.

Thanks,

But I was referring to the character of the sound rather than the content.

the content is the character. When synthisizing sound, you get what you get. Not that you can't add other effects to it, but how do you know what you think is character is not the original sound coming from the synth?

Because this plastic like character is not confined to the synth sounds but also, and mostly, to the drums.

Dantejayg, I fail to understand what this video has to do with anything, but I agree the track could be running through a synth and set to trigger the filter envelope while using a band pass filter.

That doesn't mean it didn't come directly from the synth. Most synths have a lot of knobs that do a lot of things.

I hear a combination of a few elements.

There's possibly some use of a noise gate because at some points the sound cuts off completely to nothing (sucks into vaccuum). An analog synth with the resonance filters tweaked will give you that type of synth sound, and it sounds like some funny eq/compression on the drum track (mostly hihat).

I don't understand what your asking then,I thought you were talking about the "blip" kind of noise I don't get what you mean by plastic?

I understand I wasn't clear.

I am not asking how to get that bleep or whatever specific synth or drum sound. When I listen to this I hear a very distinct character to the overall sound. Sounds like it's going through some kind of compressor/band pass EQ. I thought maybe you could help me recognize the source of this character. That album is full of parts where the sounds becomes that way and returns to normal, just really caught my ear.
