What's the word that describes the individual elements of a track an artist might send to a remixer to do a new mix - the 'parts' which when mixed together constitute the whole mix. i.e. vocals woud be one track, bass on another, drums on another. What's the jargon that describes these 'tracks' or 'parts'? I heard it the other day but I've forgotten. It's not tracks either.

Stems? Doesn't sound right. Gah..help me someone!

Stems is the word I would use, but I don't really run in those circles...

Stems could be it, but it sounded wrong to me, is there another word?

Stems -- You could say "elemental submixes" too I suppose...

"Stems" is what I've always called them. (And had people request stems from me so it seems a pretty generally used word.)

Am curious to know what the word is.

Let me know as soon as you remember. OK Skyscraper?

'Stem' refers to a track that has had its F/X and automation 'hard copied'. A 'raw track' is just the recorded track, not modified. What kind of tracks are you referring to, skyscraper?

I mean the raw tracks I suppose, like the vocal parts, or the individual samples that you might send on a hard drive to the remixer to create a new mix.

Everyone says 'stems' then? Agreed? :D

It's not stems then.

If I bounced all my drums down to stereo, all my rhythm instruments down to stereo and all my vocals+ harmonies down to stereo, I'd have three stems.

The individual tracks within a mix are just called tracks, as far as I know.

(Assuming we're talking digital audio only)

Sound files
Sound clips
Waves
Wave files

????

But they've alwaya been just "tracks" to me, and that's both in the analog tape world and digital audio world.

Could you by any chance mean "comps?"

Not exactly stems, but lets say you have four different tracks that have the same vocal on it and you take the parts from this one and parts from that one and COMPile them together.

Sort of the handshake between tracking and mixing...
