What is the best way to hook up the Alesis HD24 to a daw?

I want to use the converters on it for all the ins and outs of my daw. What would be the best way to do this? I am currently looking at rme's digiface for it's three sets of adat light pipe ins and outs, but am open to suggestions.

Question for Blue Bear if you read this, I noticed that you own the HD24 how have you incorporated it in to your set up?
 
that is about the best way. you could also do a motu 2408. i actually record on to mine first. i then transfer the tracks to the computer to edit.
 
I do it the same way as the Rain Man:D I use a MOTU 2408 mkII as my interface between the HD24 and the computer. It can function like a 24 channel A/D D/A converter/soundcard.
 
It's connected to my DAW via an RME Hammerfall 9632... (ie 16-channels of lightpipe)

I also use the Alesis fireport for faster transfer of tracks between the DAW and the HD24....

Probably a dumb question, but how much faster is the file transfer with the fireport in comparison to doing it through the ethernet connection?
 
Before I got the Fireport, a transfer of 16 tracks of a 12 minute song took me well over 2 hours.

The same transfer via fireport was several minutes for all 16.

If you have an HD24 and a DAW -- get the Fireport. Period. It's 200% worth it.
 
Sounds pretty interesting Bruce. But I still don't mind listening to the tune making real time Lightpipe transfers. A 24 track 24 bit 12 minute song takes 12 minutes to transfer.:D

do you have any problems with dropping samples? i always had this problem with adats. i would always get done to find that at least one of my tracks was a few samples shorter than the others. you cant always see it graphically.
 
I did some experiments when I first got the HD. I transfered some tracks back and forth a few times and compared a third generation bounce to the original, inverted it and sumed it and it nulled. So far so good.
 
Track Rat - I agree... I did real-time transfers (and still do) especially when I'm only working a song at a time and I'm transferring bits or sections here and there....

But recently, I've had 2 projects that were full-length concerts (16 tracks) that needed editing, re-sequencing, and then mixing. In this case, the real-time transfer was impractical for me.... especially since these projects were to do the post for a local mobile recording company and I needed to transfer the tracks off their harddrives quickly.

The real-time methods works well, but for the times where you need to get the the tracks over quickly, it's real nice having the option!
 
Is it possible to monitor tracks from the DAW while recording on an HD24 and then import the new wave into the DAW? How can I make the tracks sample accurate? I'm using Cubase VST32 on a Intel P4 with W2K and an HD24.

you can monitor if you have something like a motu 2408 that has 24ch of lightpipe in and the "cuemix" monitor mixer. you can transfer tracks via firewire through the "fireport".
 
What if I use a PCI card with ADAT I/O and ADAT sync (Hammerfal or Dakota)? Will the DAW sync to the HD24 sync (via the ADAT sync port) even when the ADAT interface is not being used to record? The audio would be coming from the PC.

if your software supports input monitoring this would work. i dont think the hammerfall has its own software monitor mixer. keep in mind, (1) adat lightpipe is only 8 channels of audio. so you will need (3) ports.
 
I'll try to be more specific. I currently import waves from a recording/practice session into Cubase where I mix and edit. I then I create a "monitor mix" wave from those tracks and transfer that file to the HD24 where I record new bass and/or guitar parts. The new bass and/or guitar tracks are then imported into Cubase and added to the mix.

I'm trying to eliminate the step of recording and transferring the "monitor mix" wave to the HD24 by monitoring the original files from the recording/practice session on the DAW.

All wave transfers are done via ethernet at this point.

Possible?
 
so you want to play your old tracks from the daw, and you want to be able to record new ones on your HD24 with using your daw to trigger playback and record?
 
Almost...I want to record new tracks on the HD24 while monitoring tracks from the DAW. The HD24 will control the DAW. I can do it now by having the HD24 send MTC to the DAW but my tracks are not in sync when I import into Cubase. I've been told that ADAT sync will solve my problem but can't find anyone that's actually done this.
 
not sure i can help you with that one. why not just record directly in to cubase using your hd24 as a converter?
