...happier than you.
Alright... if this has already been done,... a thousand pardons,... but I searched for a thread like this and couldn't find one.

I've got a 40GB IBM DeskStar 7200 RPM HDD and I'm sadly disappointed in it's performance... so... I would like to know.. what is the best HDD...? Anyone?

(P.S. keep in mind price.. I'm not looking for the latest, most expensive technology to come down the pike... I'm looking for a good drive at a reasonable price.)

You say you were disappointed by the 40GB Deskstar. What were you using prior to this that kicked its ass? I'm using a 13.6 GB Deskstar and it's fast enough to get >30 {16/44.1} audio tracks. Another post mentioned the 75GB Deskstar had some serious problems but speed wasn't one of them.

Have you looked into RAID 0 configurations of multiple drives?

Best Drive....

Wow First Post....
I saw all the computer recording stuff and just had to register.....

Anyways... In my opinion, Seagate Baracuda is the best HD

BG

yep, thats a good one too....I recommend you floss everday and use Dr.Tichenor's....take care of your gums and they will take care of you.......

O.K....

This is the problem...

I have a DeskStar,.. and you're right.. I heard they were great... well.. maybe I got a bum drive... but this thing is far from great... I have an Athlon 1.4GHZ computer,.. but simple things like emptying the recyling bin, and clearing out internet cache make the thing just sit there for untold amounts of time... Now... compare that to the piece of crap Compaq PIII 500MHZ I have at work that empties the recycle bin instantly and deletes the cache right away... it just seems like anything that involves accessing the drive is much too slow... When I record, I get this brief hiccup right when the track starts that puts the metronome out of sync with the other tracks... it's just nowhere near what I thought it would be...

I have had this thing for a while... and have upgraded Windows and reinstalled Windows a couple times... but never from scratch... basically,.. I've never wiped the drive since I bought it... so it could be that I've got so much crap on there and it's been so contorted and screwed up over time that now it's having access problems.. but if I remember correctly... it was always like this... I don't know.. all I know is, this drive, in it's current state.. sucks. So either there's a way to clean up the access times or I get myself a new one...

I had to laugh at that! *LOL*

DAW Likes to have it's own seperate HD.... Keep all your games and word processors seperate..

Daw should have it's own drive or at least 10 Gig partitioned area of a drive..

BG

exactly....if the Deskstar is your only drive, get a second drive (large, but it doesnt have to be 7200 rpm)...use this new drive as your main drive for apps, OS, etc, as as our dentally challenged friend pointed out, use the IBM for audio files only.....

Well...

I downloaded that Disk Bench software from the website link that you gave me... (which, btw, had all sorts of info but almost no tweaks... basically, now I know everything there is to know aboot hard drives and seek times, but still don't know how to make them faster...) :p and I used it to run a benchmark of my disk... so.. here it is... what's the verdict...? is it good? is it bad? is it all in my mind? somebody tell me... :(

Sounds more likely a windows problem.
I would tend to reformat and reload.
Take the op to get the latest drivers
for everything.
Before you reload EVERYTHING,
do a check of the DAW and see if
has licked the startup delay.
Cause if it hasn't licked it,
get a new drive.
I've been very happy with IBM
40g drives. Just bought a 60g
maxtor, hope it doesn't rot.

Make sure you are using the
80 pin ultra dma cables and DMA
is enabled.

Personally, I like the WD se drives

Me Too...I got a couple new ones with 8mb buffer...Excellent !!

I will also add that I had a WD beforehand that was doing the same thing and as it turns out nothing would fix it, not even a reformat and fresh install. I sent it back to WD and they sent me a new one....of course it was still under warranty.

dang.... who resurrected this ancient thread??

:D

I've been through a couple drives since then, and I think it was just a Windows issue anyway... that was way back when I was on W2K.

I'm using a Maxtor D740X right now and it's been just fine for ProTools (even though I use partitions instead of different physical drives)... but I'm aboot to upgrade to two Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9's. They benched better than the current crop of 8MB cache drives (WD 2000JB and IBM GXP180) on StorageReview.com.

(sheesh.. this thread is oooold.. :p)

i had a D740X until a couple weeks ago. i swear that was the loudest drive ever, it squealed like hell. i found a good deal on an ibm 180gxp .... i haven't noticed any performance difference, but ah, sweet silence

you musta got a bum drive... seriously... mine is really quiet. I can't even tell it's there unless it's doing heavy accessing.

WATYF

it was maybe a year old. it's possible it was quiet at first, but i really only noticed how much it squealed a couple months ago when i loaded up that computer with audio stuff. it wasn't so much that it was particularly loud, it just had a very distinct tone to it that creeped into everything. especially my BRAIN.

I'll take Maxtor DMPLUS, Western dig is not a bad option either.

HD

yeah if your computer hangs during recycle bin and whatnot that could be the mb/driver configuration as well. I have an IBM 40gb right now..it's the 60gxp which my friend told me some of them had quality issues but mine has been going strong for a couple years now.

the 75gxp's ran HOT!. I had one and got a special fan just for it to suck the heat away from it and out of the case

the 60gxp's I'm told are a mixed bag. There have been a few people I know that said they pooped out on them, so there could have been a quality issue there.

the 120gxp's are supposed to be stable.

I've heard good things about the seagate drive too, IDE drives are no doubt getting much better and the gap between ide and scsi isn't quite as pronounced anymore. STILL not recommending running an application server with IDE if scsi is financially plausible but anyways...
