What is so bad about the MR-8?

I wouldn't hold out too much hope for that (pre improvement), but you never know....it is still in the same price range + $100, which would indicate to me that they just threw in the HD, some extra XLR inputs, and some silver spraypaint... :D

As you said, you have the board now...but...
I will probably upgrade to the VF-160EX anyway...

The MR8 does what it does very well. It’s not for everybody, but can meet the recording needs of many.

I only record one or two tracks at a time. I use no effects, and do all mixing on the PC. For me, the MR8 is just the raw recording device. It performs that function very well. That coupled with it’s USB WAV transfer capability make recording easy and efficient.

For those who need to record multiple tracks at a time, or events like bands, the MR8 is a poor fit. For those who don’t use a PC for the final mix down process, the MR8 may also not be the best fit.

Well put! I do the same as you, and with the Yamaha MG10/2 in my signal chain, I am happy with the results I am getting. When I was talking upgrading, I meant that I wasn't going to upgrade until my MR-8 dies a hard death. That may be awhile. (uh... knock on wood)

There are no moving parts, so the MR8 isn't likely to just die.

Other than what I've heard about weak and/or tempermental buttons, there aren't really any parts that can "break",... are there?

Looks like you're stuck with the MR8 for all of recording eternity!

There are two limitations to the MR8 that can sometimes be a problem.

The first is memory. Even with a 512 card, you only have about 100 minutes of recording time. When doing things next to the PC, this works fine. However when taking the unit elsewhere to record someone else, this can be a problem.

The second is the limitation of recording only 2 tracks at a time. Even though it can handle 8, the 2 at a time can also be an issue.

Both of these are mostly eliminated in the upcoming MR8HD unit, which has a hard drive for 40 hours, and 4 inputs and 4 track recording.

Yep, it's got it's limitations. I don't really mind that I can only record 2 tracks at a time because 1) I don't record live drums or a band 2) I've got a 10 channel mixer.
I also don't mind the recording time limitations of the CF card, because I have yet to take my MR-8 anywhere but my bedroom/studio...

Hey Dave, if it's going to last forever, so be it! ;)

Yeah, that! I think I covered those points pretty well in previous posts!

You're so much more diplomatic than I am, though!;)
