I have a qn...what's a tube microphone. I know the AKG c12 is a tube mic, and it needs its own power supply...what's in it? does it need a preamp and phantom power?

thanks

yes, you need a preamp. no, you do not need phantom power.

Just an FYI (based on your use of TOOB, instead of TUBE)

Tube circuit = a properly-designed (and as such, comparatively expensive) circuit incorporating tubes instead of transistors and powered with adequate power supplies.

Toob circuit = faux tube = a solid-state circuit with a low-voltage tube thrown in, in parallel, for mild coloration (some dirt that the marketing department likes to call "warmth.")

newbie question here

if i have a tube pre (not a REALLY high end one), do i really need a tube mic? i know i shouldn't use a tube mic with a low end tube pre, since you CAN have too much of a good (?!) thing.
and if i have a tube mic do i really need a tube pre? i guess not, for that mic at least, am i right? a good tube pre would be more useful than a tube mic, i guess, since i can plug all my mics into it.
i know this sounds like one of sonusman's prank posts, but its SERIOUS. :)

A good tube pre is going to run you at least 3-4K...... so yeah, it's going to be very versatile!

and a high end digital is around $2k, right. so i'm sticking to digital for the time being, since i'm such a cheapstake.:D

It's ok to use a tube mic with a tube pre. Use whatever works.

what i was saying is i hear a lot of reports that a tube mic won't go fine with a cheap tube (or toob) pre. it may get kinda muddy. of course that wouldn't happen with a high end tube pre, i suppose.

Hey Bruce, serious question: Does this mean that you don't think the Peavey vmp2 is good? It's only aroung $600 and I rather like it's sound. Just curious.

I've been hearing a lot of the same reports. Only mine say that EVERYTHING sounds muddy with a cheap "toob" pre. :)
