Forgive my ignorance, but I need explaining what a compressor is exactly.
From what I understand on computer software, it basically irons out the levels to a certain standard. But how does this work with a hardware compressor? Where does it go in the chain of things? Before the multi-track or after? And how can simply ironing out levels change the whole sound of the instrument?!
