What interface to buy?

What is the difference between all those types of firestudios?

Edit: I know what the difference is in specs, but why should I consider the 'tube' over the 'project'?

You don't want any of 'em. They're DICE II monstrosities. Compatibility problems all around.

Apparently, the Mackie 400F is also DICE II.

So out of your final three, the MOTU is the only one is likely to be reliable.

My suggestions in no particular order would generally be MOTU, Apogee, or RME. Anything by those three should be pretty good.

Hmm yeah, now that you mention it.. what about that focusrite stuff?

Also DICE II crap, mostly, IIRC. Some of their early stuff was BeBoB, but you have to be really careful about which models you buy.... I'd avoid it like the plague.

Ive been using the Line6 UX8 for a set of 8 preamps for my DPS24...but you can also use it for an interface if you want to use your computer to record on to...it comes with Abelton Live and retails arround the $500 mark.

One more suggestion, the echo audiofire 8/12..

I've never owned or used one, so I have no idea what the pres sound like and I also have no idea how robust/reliable the hardware is.

IIRC, it's BeBoB, so it ought to be reasonable as far as driver reliability goes (assuming the hardware itself is reliable), though it will likely use more CPU than the MOTU.

RME Fireface 800

Get an RME FF 800. I love mine and the expandability is fantastic.

Do not get the Firestudio Tube if you use Vista. It wouldn't work for me at all. The Firepod did work with Vista 32 but not the FS Tube.

The RME unit works flawlessly with my Vista 32 computer.

I love it.

I know those RME machines are great, but they're way above my budget so not a realistic option for me, sadly.

i would DEFINITELY recommend the presonus firepod.
it hass worked absolutely great for me thus far

Keeping within your budget, I'd say +1 on a used MOTU mkII

Is there anybody that wanna talk me out of buying a motu 828 mkIII? Please speak now..

I have a pair of RME MultifaceII that I might be selling one of, cause I am going to Apogee for 16 out of 24 .

It has 8 in and 8 out and midi but you have to use an external mic pre...I can set you up if you like.

Are you going to a Mac Pro or a Macbook Pro? If its the laptop than this option is out unless you buy the card for the laptop.

Where are you located?
