OK,

after bidding for (and not winning) the highly desirable Behringer compressor, because of not wanting to pay more than 50-60 dollars. I get this e-mail from some dude.

Hello-
I see that you were outbid on a recent Ebay auction for a 2 channel compressor, and thought to let you know that we have the following for sale at $85.00:
ALTO (made in the same factory as Behringer, DBX, and Alesis)CLE 2.0 2 channel comp/limiter/gate (go to www.musiciansadvocate.com for further specs)
Email if interested, and thanks for your time:)

Has anyone ever heard of these (ALTO compressors), AND is that true that all the lower end rack gear is made in the same factory in china by Kathy Lee Giffords children?

Just wondering, If this is just some new packaging trying to get us to buy the same lower end stuff. (notice I did not say garbage, although some may think that, but us low end budgeters luv this garbage, or at least that's we say to ourselves, maybe because we don't know any better, lol)

Gator,

I can't tell you where the Alto gear is made, but you can bet it's somewhere in Asia, however, it is showing up all over the place here in Australia.

Oddly enough, since Behringer restructured their Aust., distributorship and became somewhat difficult to deal with, the Alto products seem to be taking their place in quite a number of stores.

I would suspect it will be another case of getting what you pay for.

Alto is a rather new lost cost manufacturer on the music scene. Makes budget stuff, much in the line of Behringer/Art/Phonics. $85 is cheap, and it probably will work, but don't expect anything really good. :)

The design is probably stolen directly from some other budget compressor/expander/limiter/gate design, such as the infamous Alesis. :)

Alto is not a Behringer knockoff. Here is a pic of their programmable comp

And their 2-ch tube preamp

Both were reviewed in a Swedish magazine last month, and got thumbs up... especially considering the price. The tube unit was stated as above the Art stuff (considered to be the closest competitor), at less price and twice the channels. Also it has separate in/out levels, so you can tweak the amount of tube sound.

The digital compressor was stated as very good sounding, but complex in use due to the small info window. A PC editor is supposed to be on the way, and that would make it better.

I haven't tested these units myself, so I'm just quoting here. The Altos are budget units, yes... but deserves a look/listen I think.

Oh, and the digital programmable compressor is a 3-band unit too, which makes it stands out even further. And in it's price range, no other unit (that I know of) has it.

Well, no, I think there are a few factories.
Here's one of the most well known:

Don't be surprised if you find your mic there.

Probably a lot of stuff that's basically the same out there, but with different names. I don't want to start rumours, so I will not tell you which brand I think Alto is most related to.

Yeah, but so does Behringer gear. In fact, I can't remember anything NOT getting a thumbs up in that magazine. Those reviews are pretty much useless....

Alto is not only knocking off Behringer, but they are a knock-off company. Nothing bad with that mind you! It's excellent for us musicians! The more competition the better!

Yeah, Im not saying its great either, but I do not think its a Behringer knockoff. Their products does not share either chassis or functions.

The 2-channel 1/2 rack micpre for instance is completely different from behringers units.... maybe a presonus knockoff ? I don't know, and I don't care.

I'm happy with my Joemeek and Focusrite preamps and comps.

Yes, as I mentioned there are other companies than Behringer you can knock-off. Which one they knocked off with the preamp is hard to say without opening it up and comparing, but then again it doesn't really matter, since most of these cheap tube preamps probably use some old tried and tested design taken from a "build your own preamp" magazine. :)

I must say, I think anyone who have an opinion on a piece of gear that they never tested is a stupid person. Even if it's a cheap unit.

If everyone did that, the RNC would be unheard of.

Define "opinion" and mention one person who according to you is a stupid person because they have had an "opinion" they shouldn have had.

For example, saying that X is probably worth what you pay for it, because they usually are, is that an opinion, in your opinion?

All I've figured out so far, is that you are a Pucko of great magnitude.

Alto is a low cost manufacturer, they do knock-off other companies, and their products are therefore likely to be very similar in performance to other low cost knock-off manufacturers products. That means that they are not amazingly great, but for the most part worth their money.

If you somehow have problems with this, then get a life. Or drop dead. It's up to you. But don't go around insulting people just because they say truths you don't want to hear.

Sorry you're so easily insulted then... I don't believe I said anything to offend anyone, like you are leaning towards right now.

I just think that it's stupid to jump to conclusions, and that's it.
You don't have to wish people dead cuz you have a different opinion.... but I pretend like you had a bad day or something.

Peace.

Ha, yeah, right. Well, luckily people here aren't as easily fooled by that type of antics as you seem to think, so they'll see right through that.

I didn't. In fact, I can't see that you have voiced any opinions that I don't agree with. This may be because you have voiced little opinion in the first place, but that's another thing.
It's your cowardly way of insulting people by insinuation just because you don't like what they are saying I have problems with.
