First time out with a new amp. The guitar is a Les Paul through a Marshall DSL40C. I'm curious as to how people like it. Greg did drums. They sound great (I think the toms are really cool myself). Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Tune is very cool! Much too much compression... How did you even get the overheads to pump like that? Could be a cool effect if not so fatiguing.

I envision a couple of dudes playing with big black Buddy Holly glasses. :D

Hah, love the tune. The compression is a bit much, but the recording sounds just like "The Who sell out" 1967 especially with Gregs drumming and that vocal style you have that I love. You might want to re-think the mastering job, otherwise I love what you did. Great job Trip. Guitars sounds great.

How did you get the compressor to pump like that? Makes me feel I'm in a wind tunnel lol. Cool tune.

I like the tune, but I think it is a bit overly compressed. I would like to hear it opened up a bit.

100% agree with all the above. Song sounds great underneath though. Look forward to hearing a revised mix.

:thumbs up:

Ditto. That thing is getting hammered. The soundcloud player doesn't help either.

On the plus side, the guitars sound pretty good. A little tiny bit scratchy, but that could partially be the effects of compression and the soundcloud player.

Hmm doesn't sound like a ton of compression to me. There's no compression on the overheads. Just a limiter on the main buss. And no more than I usually put on. I'll back off it a bit and put it back up.

Yes....it sounds like a pretty hard limiter on the main. You can hear it for sure.

Each instrument sounds great. All together though, the compression and/or limiting is squashing it all together in a bad way. I do love Greg's bass drum on this though. Sounds like it has more thump and low end than usual. It's a cool, driving tune. Not sure if the singer's voice suits the song, just something about it is weird to me. Not to say it's bad, just doesn't do it for me in this tune. Guitars sound good.

This has the same vibe of a band called The Pursuit of Happiness from the 80's or 90's. Particularly a song called "Hard to Laugh". Not vocally, but music-wise.

I replaced the track with a new version. Same link at the top will get you to it.

Thanks RAMI and everyone else who listened. I still don't think there was a ton of compression. Anyway, since it really seems to be bugging people, I backed off it a bit. Hopefully enough. I MP3'd it at a higher bit rate, so maybe that will help. Otherwise, I didn't touch the mix.

See if you like it better.

It seems to me the combination of cymbals being on top of the mix, master limiter hot, and possibly the quality of the export may have been part of the issue with the first mix. I am still hearing something un natural here though. I am in the middle of a session so just took a second to listen. My ears are kinda fried now anyway.

Later...

around 1:37 I here something strange, sounds like pumping, but maybe it is something else. But something is going on around that time mark.

Vocals could come up a bit on my system.

I put a slightly revised mix #2 at the top.

Mix #1 is already revised from the first mix #1. I just backed off the limiter.

Mix #2 - Based on a couple of comments, I put some slight compression on the overheads. I also lowered the overhead level and the guitar level. Just a wee bit. I then backed the limiter off further.

Both mixes in the top post.

Mix #2 sounding much better man! :D

Vocals are still a bit overpowered by the cymbals to me. Cymbals IMO should accent the song, not distract from it. That is what I am hearing them do.

I also feel that there is too much or wrong compression on the kick. It seems to need a bit more air. I like a punchy kick, but this almost seems as if it is too abrupt-if that even makes sense. I would love to hear more of the natural sound of the kick combined with the compressed. Maybe try parallel compression.

Thanks Jimmy. I'll let this thread continue to brew a little bit and see what others say about the cymbals. I can always pull them down more. Yeah that kick has some punch in it huh? :)

Absolutely do man. My way is not the only truth. Just what I hear in my cave.

Yeah, it very punchy, but it seems a bit overboard to me for the song. Just fine tuning from here would be my suggestion.

The tune is really cool MMM! :)

I'd suggest you take any and every bit of processing off the overheads and bring them down considerably. They are way up there as they sit now. And really, the soundcloud player is pretty brutal to real cymbals. I notice it on my own tracks and on other people's tracks with real drums. Post the song as a HQ MP3, or hell, even a wav so we can see what happens.

Cool tune! Other than the cymbals being a little loud, it's a pretty good mix.

I agree with all the other sentiments here. Cool tune and good performances, but the cymbals are kind of slaying everything else. Mix 2 does sound much better, but the cymbals are still really f-ing loud!

There's also an unintelligible quality to the vocals that's making it difficult to understand a lot of the words (for me). They seem a little dull or something.

I don't know. I think you have the makings of a great tune here. I just think the mix still has a good ways to go, IMHO.
