I want to buy a firewire computer interface device that has at least 10 mic/line inputs - actually they can all be line inputs as I plan to use high end mic pres.
Who makes a good interface unit like this and if I want more inputs, say 12, 16, 20 etc. do I have to go with a "mixer" like an Onyx, etc?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

If you're looking strictly for I/O and aren't concerned about preamps or phantom power... I think the motu 2408mk3 has the most I/O of anything out there. I have one and use it to interface a variety of formats. TDIF from a couple of Tascam desks, ADAT from a mackie SDR hard disk recorder (with adat sync connection). Analogue I/O through a patch bay. There's very little that I can't patch through this unit.

Not a lot of mention of this interface on this board... but I think it excels at I/O

The MOTU 24 I/O Interface! It's the "Bad Dad!" One wire, 24 tracks! Make shure your computer can maintain a stiffy first! :D

Oh yeah...there's also Apogee units that allow for 16 ins and outs...

a motu question

can the 828mlkII record itself?? if not anyone know of a stand alone recorder/interface??

Also others will give you like 8 ins, but are expandable via lightpipe and/or SPDIF digital inputs to give you a total of up to 18 in's. The digital in's are kinda nice since you aren't locked in to the interface's convertors.

Look into the Tascam, fostex and yamaha recording sites. They're some major stand alone recorder manufacturers...
