What has happened to Koss?

As a former broadcaster who still makes commercials for air, i've used a set of Koss Pro4AA's for years. These came with a lifetime warranty, so when I started to experience dropouts, I sent them back about a month ago -- telling the company how much I depended on these and asking that particular care be taken in their repair. About 2 weeks ago I got them back, took them into the studio (assuming they'd be perfect) only to find that one side was totally dead (worse than when I sent them back to begin with). So I called Koss to complain and was assured by a CS supervisor that another pair would be shipped that day. After a few days a refurb pair arrived in a crushed box. The phones had only been placed in a plastic bag and some brown paper, so when the box got crushed, so did the phones -- with the right ear piece now dangling by a wire. Koss claims they ship all their products this way, and my experience is unique, and they will ship another pair UPS ground. So I'm supposed to wait a few more days. Right now, I'm on my way out the door to buy a pair of Sennheisers, but even so, what has happened to Koss? Obviously nobody in service could have listened to my original pair, or they'd never have shipped them with no sound coming out from one side. It's all a bit disappointing.

:( Might be like a bunch of other companies, thery're past their prime.

Yo Billisa & Woofman:

When I think of Koss, I think of low grade gear. I don't know if they have moved up to quality but the one pair of Koss cans I had long ago were ugly.

But, the shipping quality indicates some very careless work at the Koss shipping department.

I just got a mic stand, very durable, iron, etc., and the folks who shipped to me had it covered in bubble plastic to protect it. Seems like Koss needs an overhaul.

I agree with the Greenness...
Koss used to rock back in the late 70's to early 80's (I remember they used to make some fantastic high end home speakers to compete with Klips and Altecs) but then they started on a downward spiral.

To bad...

Yes i bought a pair of koss headphones a while back and i cant say i got my moneys worth.

Koss has lost quality. At one time I was a fan of some of their gear. They made some very decent headphones and I have a pair of home stereo speakers that are quite good.

The Koss Corporate offices are very close to my home base, so I get to read things in the local business news and "hear things".

Koss has had some financial difficulties and I'm sure there have been some cutbacks and other "shortcuts" designed to save money - which normally results in a compromise in quality and customer service.

Too bad!!! It seems to be running rampant in Coprate AMERICA.

The Latest...

OK, so last April 10/11 Koss was supposed to ship me yet another pair of Pro4AA's to replace the defective and crushed ones. I called them yesterday, the 15th because by now that next pair should have arrived. Turns out Koss doesn't have the tracking number -- my guess is because they never shipped the new pair. So, now they say they're shipping yet ANOTHER pair. Fortunately I went out and bought some Sennheiser HD280Pro's that sound terrific, so I can continue working. But trying to remain loyal to Koss has been nothing but a real pain. If I have time, I'm going to write a letter to the CEO. We'll see. It's not that the people at Koss haven't been nice, it's just that their customer service system needs some attention. Plus, I still think sending $100. headphones in a small box, in a plastic bag and thin brown paper, via UPS is asking for trouble. Either Koss has discovered a new moneysaving packing method, and every other mail-order company I've worked with hasn't seen the light, or Koss doesn't care about it's own products/customers. How much is a bigger box and bubble-rap?

FYI, I just bought some Senn 280s from Merchandise Direct. I asked for a strong outer box with inside bubble protection, and I received both. The phones arrived in perfect condition, and they sound wonderful. More on that in another thread (since I bought and AB'd 5 different phones before settling on the Senns).

The 280's have a very clean, open and airy sound -- plus very extended, though not boomy bass. They sound very accurate. Enjoy!

PS. My 3rd pair of Koss Pro4AA's arrived today, in paper and plastic, but this time they're OK!!! So I'll use 'em as back-up for my Sennheiser 280's.
