5 dollar loud blunts
I'm new at recording and I'm not sure what I need to have to be able to do what I want. What I want to do is record 2 tracks simultaneously, one for vocals and one for an acoustic guitar. How would I do this and about how much would this cost me?

Allow me to direct you to the 2nd half of this thread:

Pretty much for any one-man-band stuff, you only need a 2 channel interface. A USB one would be fine for this sort of thing.

Be sure to read the many threads in the Newbies section that asks the same questions. There is a steep learning curve ahead of you and the first step is to start reading.... the newbies section is a great place to browse and read.

have fun,

Not to be a luddite, but you could do it with a stereo cassette recorder and a 2-channel mixer. Seriously. Might get by for under $50, too.

Let me stop you right there... you're new at recording and you already know the exact method you're going to use.

No you don't. You just think you do. You don't yet know what will work and what will provide the quality you're looking for.
What gear you need depends upon what quality you're chasing. As steveb said, if you think this is all you want, spend $50 on a cassette....

Read chilli's link - and do some checking.

Do you have a budget? Is this something you've always wanted to do? What is the purpose of these recordings - what will you do with them?

All good questions to answer before buying anything.

I added everything up once and it was a pretty scary number. I'll never do that again. Nor will I ever let my wife know how much I've spent.

Indeed 'tis, scary... granted I'm not young and poor, but when I see people trying to do a complete studio for $250 for "professional recordings"and I've "invested" $2K (back when the Aus/Everywhere else exchange rate sucked) in a single microphone, it does wear, after a while!

Hey OP - ignore us, we're just joshing - you should be able to get a decent starter set up, depending upon what you need, for an amount in the hundreds, not the thousands... assuming you already have a PC you can use, that is...
