You also posted in BOLD! There's a lot of reading you need to do first, look at the 1000+ posts shown as "newbie needs advice", etc!
First you will need a microphone, an interface and a computer with recording software (DAW). Monitors, headphones, mic stand, cables .....

yeah, as frustrating as it is.... reading as much as possible before purchasing will save you tonnes of money. I can gaurantee that I am not the only one on this board that purchased something and then realized it didn't quite do what we expected and then had to go out and purchase something else. (sometimes its the only to learn though, haha)

as stated above you need a mic, an interface a computer, and some softwarre on the computer to record on to. Plus you need all the cords and headphones and speakers to go with it. This will give you the most felxability for expansion and upgrading later on. (as apposed to some kind of stand-alone harddisk based recording unit)

Mic are a tough desicion, personaly I like a good Condenser mic but that is often a personalized thing depending on the sound you like and your type of voice as well.

The interface is the hardest choice to make I think... there are so many and they all behave slightly different. read up on as many different types as you can before spending money.

recording software can get expensive but they often have cheaper versions of the same program .... ie CuBase Studio5 is a lesser version of Cubase. Depending on your needs, it might be all you need.

a good set of 'Studio' headphones are required. studio headphones have less dressing introduced from the speakers to the sound so you can get an idea of how the music sounds without the extra bass or EQ's built in to most regular Speakers.

then you might want set or two of studio speakers/ monitors.... you'll notice every speaker has its own sound, so people oiften have a few sets so you can listen how the music sounds on each type.

There seem to be some assumptions that you want to use a computer for recording, which is not really necessary...

As was suggested, you really do need to read the information in the Newbies section; there is a lot of good basic stuff in there.

Then you will be equipped to decide whether you want to use a computer, or perhaps invest in a stand-alone recorder...

The beauty of the H4n is that it's BOTH!

Rather than searching forums for what you don't even know what to search for, I'd suggest going here: Tweak's Guide to the Home and Project Studio

Then get a simple mic and a simple, easy to use, audio interface (the first one I got was the emu 0404). The interface will come with free lite versions of sequencers. I started out using computer speakers as monitors. Believe me, once you learn a few things, there will be a multitude of places where you see that you can spend more money. So I would start simple. Enjoy.
