Ive been checking out different soundcards but im not exactly sure what some of the stuff on them is. I want to be able to transfer tracks from my alesis adat as well as record straight off my mixer. What should i be looking for to do this?
Also, what is SPDIF and what types of things is this used for? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Im really lost on this end of things.

Sony/ Phillips Digital Interface Format.
It's a stereo digital audio format

To transfer multiple tracks from an Adat you need to use a Lightpipe format.

Thanks for the info guys. I was wondering if there were any cards with the lightpipe format in the 300 dollar range. Possibly a little more?

You could check out the RME line of cards, from what I've heard they are top end for a relatively low price. Then again, I'm just posting gossip, put I've heard this across a couple of boards so far.

An RME would do it, just as a Marian MarcA, STAudio DSP adat, some creamware cards and others.

Got an RME Hammerfall and its quite easy to work with, but digital only. The Creamware pulsar does this also but is very different.

Warning. I had the Pulsar card for a few months and had problems with it and there tech support was non existant. I use a MOTU 2408mkII now which runs like a scalded dog.

Yes, a pulsar card is not without its problems. But when they run....
