It chops up the sound into little pieces - kinda like a tremolo with the rapid volume changes only it's more like very fast volume on/off switch. I know Pink Floyd used it. I think it was also used on "Tuff Enuff" by Fab.Thunderbirds. Anyone know what it's called?

I don't think so. Think of a long, sustained signal - say about 60 seconds. Now swipe a half-second-wide erasure through the signal every other half-second. Zat make sense?

Or how about the Randy Rhoads, one volume on, one volume off, pick up selecter switch trick. Or editing. Or taking one of the outputs from a stereo panner and running it through a noise gate.

I agree w/ grinder. very easy and effective on a Les Paul.

you could try

The Boss BF-3 flanger has a Gate/Pan mode which switches between left and right channels using both outputs or when using one output will turn the signal on/off according to the rate you have dialed in - pretty cool check it out.
