What effect to "Autotune the news"?

Hi, might be a stupid question, but is an autotune plugin actually used to get the autotune the news effect, or would I need a vocoder or something like that?

I was looking on YouTube for autotune tutorials and they all seemed like they just locked whatever's being autotuned to the nearest actual note. I'm looking to basically take a track of someone speaking, "modulate" it with a midi melody track, and have it end up as the speaking put to the tune of the melody, without necessarily sounding like a cyborg if possible. If someone could point me in the right direction of what effect I'm looking for I'd appreciate it. FWIW, I record with Reaper.

Thanks.

You'd need a reasonably extreme setting on the autotune to do that, so I doubt very much you'll be able to get it so sound at all natural. Pitch changes in vocals aren't just a case of pitch changes. There's the whole element of expression that autotune isn't going to be able to emulate if it isn't there already.

And that, my friends, is the state of top forty music today...

re:

from what i can tell the trick is to write a song first using the "words" from your vox/talking sample. in the auto tune the news vid for "bed intruder" you can see the main auto tune guy singing the lyrics and playing the parts on a piano, singing it a bit loungey.

so first you have to "write a song" around your talking/vox, then you have to cut up the talking/vox line up rhythmically to your chord progression.

next step is to figure out the key of the song and the notes of the vocal melody.

then apply any autotune plug you have and shift all the static vocal/talking (that has been cut to your underlying chord progression/beat/whatever) and tune the vox notes to the appropriate melody you have written.

the key is writing the song before you edit and chopup the vox.
