What does it take to acoustically couple two spaces?

I've got a small room that has OK dimensions, but it can get a little washy and muddy. The room has a closet with a staircase inside that goes up to the attic. Similarly, the room opens to a hallway at the top of a staircase. Is opening a doorway enough to couple these spaces?

Bass traps. In all corners. And at point of first reflection on the side walls. And a cloud.
