what does a guitar preamp do?

i have a 1680, should i use its preamps (i think it has sum)
or invest in sum giood ones, and what does one exactly do?

also recommend sum and how much they cost,

A guitar preamp brings the signal up to line level, and often times adds various effects (distortion, reverb, delay, flange, etc...)

If you have a combo amp (guitar amp), then it's got a built in preamp.

Pods and J-stations and stompboxes are considered preamps.

Your 1680 does have some nice guitar preamp effects, but most people recommend to get the sound you're looking for with outboard gear and/or an amp when it comes to guitar (at least distorted guitar). You'd probably do just fine to use the 1680's preamp effects for clean sounds (IMO)
