What does a Edirol USB Audio Interface do?

I am looking to get started recording and mixing guitar, and it was suggested that I get an EdiRol USB Audio Interface, and that it was $79.00. My question is - which model is this, and just what exactly (in plain English please - I am a Newbie) does this item do?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated!
 
It digitizrs a stereo analog audio input signal and sends it to a computer through a USB port.
