I use a...
Korg Triton LE 61 key
MPC 1000
E-mu Mo`Phatt sound module
Cubase SX

For instruments I usually use what i'm feeling at the moment rap is not limited to certain sounds.

Try making a 4 bar drum loop then adding extra instruments as you go.

After you have done that go back and copy yor loop to another section then change up the drums and a couple of the other instruments.

Then work out a intro (4bars) hook (4-8 bars), verse (16 bars), hook (4-8 bars), verse (16 bars),hook (4-8 bars), outro (4-8 bars) from the loops you created.

Good luck :)

everything(beats) is made on my Yamaha RM1X //all recordings is down in Cubase and mastering is done in Wavelab with Waves Diamond,,

i use:
Korg triton Studio 61
Roland fantom-x7
yamaha motif rack
Roland mv8000 or Mpc4000

everything is tracked and mixed in nuendo 3(as of a few days ago) or samplitude 7.2
most of my serious masters go to Glenn Schick Mastering here in atlanta.. i also do inhouse masters for ppl via nuendo 3 or wavelab 5 with my uad-1's and/or a bunch of other plugins

 Ya'll are ridiculous. I downloaded FL Studio 4 off of Kazaa for free and bought a Sample CD off of E-Bay for $15. I've been making beats for 2 years and mine are the best I've heard locally in a long long time. If anybody is serious, e-mail me and we can listen to each other's and get opinions and advice.
