What do you use for your sample sources? CDs or something else?

Taking the slow road
I could use my old drum machines, keyboards, and all the other stuff I have.

But for some fresh stuff where do you go? I'm figuring the newer of the CDs?

I never got one before. I just got my sampler.

when I'm listening to the demos from bigfishaudio, they are already sequenced together, right?

construction kits? I guess I audio sample them in and then edit them and keep them together in a bank? or am I missing something here?
ok, just found this from them:
What is a construction kit?
A construction kit is loop which usually contains multiple instruments (i.e.: drums, bass, keys, guitar, horns, etc). It sounds like a fully produced, song. However, all the elements that made that loop are broken out after the loop for you to use.

all of the above are good sources. you can sample from any music cd, you can buy sample kits that come in loops or one shots, you can download trial software programs and just take their sound folders because most are in wave format.

construction kits are nice, they usually have all the effects that were added during the mixdown, ie reverb.

It's rare like in blue moon rare when I sample, but when I do, I'm usin' dr rex refills for Reason. I might start sampling a little bit for some east coast flavor.

I sample loops very rarely, but i do sample a lot of one shots, ie: kicks, claps, snares, rimshots............. I work mainly from synths.

when i sample loops i also do it mainly to give the track an eastcoast feel.

Well, I shopped around for some sample CD's and listened to the demos, cool stuff but I can't imagine exactly how useful they'd be for me.

I started to sample my own kit and guitar and that's pretty cool, to hear my own kit actually played in perfect time!

Fun, but a lot of work truncating and stuff.

LOL We won't even go into the sample one hitters. I don't think those count because if you're not using that, than you're limited to a drum machine. Even the MPC uses a lot of sampled shit.

don't really sample much

But i do wen i feel it in me too, last time that happened i remixed tupacs "changes".

now that was worth samplin and remixin!

But back to the topic at hand, you should really do a search for ur specific program or piece of gear ur using to find the samples that rite for u

wow this is an old topic...

I think ppl still had VINYL BACK THEN

*hint*

:D

Homie, I know what you were saying - it's just that a lot of cats now got hate for sampling - knowhatI'mean?

Sampling is here to stay. I don't have any issues with it. I only have issues with big name labels sampling every damn thing and not coming up with anything original (and not paying for the clearance for the sample...that's the bigger problem).

But charge that one to the game and move on.

Fiev.

I'm not talking about us at HR.

On some other boards people talk like sampling takes no effort or creativity - which is totally false; if that were true, Premo, Pete Rock, etc. didn't do much work.

I meant in general...but anybody who says it takes no creativity probably hasn't done an intricate sample themselves and tried to blend it into a mix.

I sample from any and everything... Dont limit your sample sources... Every sample source add its own ambience to the sound...

Sampling is an art... Im not talking about sampling like PUFF and jacking the original concept(like dem MA$E jointz back in the mid 90's).. Im talking about taking obscure pieces and blending em togther for a different sound.....

I am always trying different sample sources to create a new ambience...

See that's the thing....you talk to the normal cat about sampling he'll think of Puff. That's not always how it is.

Exactly, the type of sampling I love and try to do myself is the J. Dilla, Hi-Tek style that's highly creative.

Thats great... If you are 15 year old... We need the younger hiphopers to embrace the art of sampling or the art will die out...

J Dee and Hitek are excellent choices... Especially J-Dee..

You don't need some corny sample CD. Just use your ears... When you hear something you want, take it. Forget about clearances cause you're probbably not making money off of it anyhow. Plus you can make better music to get you noticed if you just jack samples without concern for clearances (which are pretty lame IMO) So long as it's good music don't worry about where you got the samples.
