I'm guessing alot of that's going to get cleaned up though....

and if not, viva la Indie.

What do you mean by "giving the snare more air". Reverb?

No, not reverb, although that can sometimes give the illusion of "air". I basically mean a little more high's in the 5-8k range. Not much though. I can tell the snares tone is pretty good, but it lacks a clean presence in the mix. In fact, the whole drum sub-mix could probably benefit from a little more high-end, but particularly the snare.

Ok, thanks for that. Im a total newb.

Ill make sure to post it when I give it another go.

What are you monitoring through?

Also, and this isn't a personal slam towards you or anything, this is just a general observation about the genre, but why is this "low-fi" indie thing so popular now? Why do some people want to make bad sounding mixes? Since when does sounding like shit = cool? It seems to me that some people hide their crappy mixes and songs behind a low-fi shield. I'm by no means saying that everything needs to sound huge and commercial, but damn, you can be "indie" and avant-garde and still sound good, can't you?

Yeah there is "good sounding" indie out there, it's not all bad buzzy guitars and garbage pale snare drums.

And "Indie" can be several things too. I think by proper defintion it's "Independant" or a major label. The Flaming Lips fits the indie rock genre, and some of their stuff is very well done, and hi-fi.

I actually hate the term "indie" but the term "alternative" was tainted forever when Hootie and the Blowfish, Gin Blossoms, etc. some how snuck into that genre. So although there's nothing really "independant" about Belle and Sebastian, they get called "indie" anyway, for lack of a better branding.

There's usually a fine line.... if your into Rush and Dream Theater, Van Halen, etc. your probably not going to digg Belle and Sebastian, The Shins, The Super Furry Animals, etc. Although their commercially successful and well recorded, The Killers The White Stripes, and The strokes are almost Indie like, in style.

If you think Van Halen looks cool wearing his Pink Spandex, with his feathered hair, while Sammy Lee Roth struts around and purses his lips at the camera, you'll probably never be a fan of indie rock.

The Indie rock group, are the group that aren't going to settle for the top 40 garbage that big radio shoves down your throat between McDonald's and Pepsi commercials.

They tend to be pretty loyal to the bands, and tend to collect like crazy.

Part of the original indie sound and vibe was due to the DIY spirit of everything, down to making your own band T-shirts, Album Art, to recording your band with what you've got.

Sounding shitty on purpose is not the intention at all.

Guided by Voices put out several 4-track albums that are legendary in the Indie Rock world.

They did several studio albums BEFORE that - and did not like the results. There is a whole lot of character in their 4-track recordings. People have written books in tribute to some of those albums.

Almost all of the "indie" stuff pays homage to The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, etc. All the indie bands, love those bands.

Having said all that - the new "indie" stuff totally sucks.

What's the shit band from Montreal that every can't stop talking about? ............

Oh yeah.... Arcade Fire. Lame.
