What do you think of this recording.

I think it sounds great except the vocals. They are not vibrant at all. It sounds like the highs all got chopped off. Which mic did they use?

I am not sure, but they sound a bit overprocessed. I think they used a cheap condensor with an avalon pre.

I heard the mix and I think it sounds nice. Very clear for the most part.

At the risk of being honest, I do have advice on the weak points:

It sounds a bit too compressed to be comfortable to the ears. The mid to low end is really boomin, almost to the point where I can feel my ears getting hot. What that tells me is that the EQing needs work. Just a tad, though. The vocals in my opinion sound alright, just needs that extra spice to really make it stand out. That could be anything from EQing to time based FX.

The drums definitly could use more spicing up and more work on timing. That will really help get your point across a lot better.

Think of it this way: A mix shouldn't be an exageration of the artist, it should represent him faithfully. If anything is going to distract the listener from the main point of the song, then it should be cut or fixed on the spot. The song might be great, but if the listener is only focused on the flaws of the mix, then you're really killing any chance of representing the artist at thier full potential.

The scary part is that really horrible mixes exsist in the world, not by home studios, but full blown multi-million dollar studios. And not just any person, but famous artists.

However, despite all those things, it's a good mix for being done in a basement.

Definitely keep pushing that quality barrier.

YES!!! 9 of 10..great

Some people I know recorded this in a basement. I sort of think it is muddy, and wanted to offer them up some advice. Any thoughts?

you'll be alright by morning...if morning ever comes....
very, very catching vocals (and recording)....listened to it 6 times
in a row. Love the Intro and first 2 verses...
bass...sweet and a familiar sound.YES!!!

the guitar has a "scratch" noise when he does the 2-chord stop type bridge,
listen for it... when the guitarist slides to the next chord...
where it goes "and i run and i try... and I hurt for yoouuuu",
should be simple to take out for a pro. kinda like de-esssing.
(no one would hear it in a bar....

3rd verse...back to Sweeet.
bridge- theres that "screeeech" again...

climax-explosion......some seperation needed, but i get it, fhkng yeah!!!
right fhkng ON!!!

i really liked the style, bridges and breaks. sounds Mastered.
the other song sounds much more home recorded and lifeless-
the recording, not the song itself.

what's you wanted right? slams'....I only gave it a 9 of 10, because
it didn't make me want to jump up and start dancing and jumping out the window. :)

p.s. listened to it on a Onkyo home stereo setup...better than 2" plastic speakers, with Technic speakers no SUB.

the fhkng Vocals ARE FHKNG AWESOME!!!!! fhk that sht...
yeah.... good sht.

the other song, Vocal is muddy or withdrawn in the mix, no crisp?.
if the world burns- re-record vocals needed?? somethin' missin in the stew!

you'll be alright...by morining.... ok i listened 8 fhkng times.. A+++
.

Here are some other songs from this band for you to hear. These were done 2 years ago on 16bit ADAT XT. No digital editing. We went from adat to the final mix due to tight budget. I think based on your previous post that you might like them.

What do ya think?

Although, not really my genre , I like it. I`de hate to have any of my bands recordings on here for critics, talking about cheap condensors and such. It`s about the music and artistry, if the music is good, people will listen. Kepp doing what you`re doing.

Fallen Angel

This song reminds me of (don`t you hate when people say that?) Coheed and Cambria. Check them out and tell me if I`m wrong.

You would think that wouldn't you except for the recording always get the critique. Just look at the examples above that the band and everybody hates so much. The songs are good, artistry is there, however the band hates the recordings...guess it is about more than just the artistry after all.

i always use the Beatles Anthology garbage...vs the finished product.

the Equipment & Recording IS the difference!

Yo boomtap, that song is BADASS! I actually think the recording has a very cool live sound to it and for a basement job, it is a job well done. sure it could be better but damn that song is awesome.

the vocals are intense and passionate. he has a great range and when he holds that one note out "And I hurt for you, YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" i had goosebumps.

i love the way the bass guitar is present in the mix. so many times it gets buried in a mix of guitars and drums.

and i agree with coolcat, the way you can hear the guitar noise is saweeet. when they are doing that jam part in the bridge on the first stop you hear guitar feedback and the second one you hear the AMP hum. sweet ass.

sure there are a few things they can work on like timing, etc but if this is some local unsigned band that really hasnt been developed or discovered by anyone like a lable or large management company, someone needs to find these guys and take them national!!!

i think you just invented a new term: sweet ass...

i started laughing in my cube and no one knows why...hahahahaaa

sweet ass sound.... heard it hear first on HR BBS!

That review cracked me up. It did the band too. The guy who engineered it is happy that people like it though.

hmmmmmm??? the song is gone??

???? I liked playing the If the World Burns...
but was wanting to play more for my friends and the links aren't working????

especially the other one???

probably my pc setup.... and the STRIKETHURMAN.COM link didn't show up???

any ideas?

Nice

Read the other posts and I agree about the vocals. Something nasty has happened to them. Too processed or something in an effort to get that sound? Bad mics? While we're talking about vocals there are a couple of points towards the end where he really loses it badly as he tries to pump it out. You might want to re-record those bits. And the dah dum dum lyrics at the end kinda spoilt an otherwise great song for me. Call me pedantic, but I hate dah dum dum lyrics.

Otherwise it's a great song, well put together and extremely listenable. Good job. I loved it.
