Hey all, my band is getting ready to start tracking drums, just wanted to get some feedback on this setup. Here goes:

4 piece DW kit
Shure 57's on toms and snare
Shure Beta 52 on kick
ADK Small capsule condensers for overheads
Shure beta 87a for high hat

Now I know these aren't the best possible mics to have, but that's what we have and we're going to go with it for now. Everything is running to a Mackie board then out to a Firewire 1814 into Pro Tools. Any suggestions, help, problems, etc would be greatly appreciated.

i think it sounds like a good setup.

DW kit? what material shells?

I find that I dont really ever need to mic the hi hat..but it cant hurt.

Yeah, I've always had plenty of hi-hat picked up by the overheads and the snare mic (blech). I'd probably mic them if I had effect hi-hats though -- an extra set of minis or something.

We may not end up micing the hat, depending on how it sounds with and without.

Sounds like a good setup. As long as you listen for the sweet spots when miking, AND capture the OHs properly!

The setup sounds reasonable, BUT if those "ADK Small capsule condensers for overheads" is ADK SC-1 I would advise you to replace them ASAP.

ADK SC-1 sounds like shit on everything imo, yes I got a pair, and the overheads are just soo important for creating the whole picture of the kit.

At least rent or borrow a couple of better ones, and get your own impression how it can (should) sound like.

Otherwise, setup is fine.
