What do you think of Alesis Monitor Ones?

The only monitors I've really spent time with are my Absolute 2s (yeah, but they were cheap :D ) and the Mackie 824s. I must say those 824s are impressive. They have a pretty nice low end to them too for a smaller nearfield monitor. Still, I would probably go for something a littel cheaper since the 824s might fatally wound my wallet....

I've always wondered why some people say you shouldnt mix using headphones.

The headphones I use, have a few response, of 5hz-22khz, alot wider than the monitors I use, which are only 35hz-25khz

Two major problems that I have experienced:

1) Inaccurate bass response. Headphones don't reproduce the bass loudness accurately. When it sounds right in headphones and you mix down then play it back over a hi-fi system or in your car the bass will overwhelm the mix.

2) The stereo field is exaggerated. A busy mix that sounds good in headphones may very well sound muddled when played back over a regular system because the panning (space between the various instrument tracks) is not as defined as the headphones led you to believe.

I do use headphones to mix (because of noise problems late at night) but I never use them for final mixes.

I do agree that the monitors sound slightly diff than the headphones I use, the monitors sound more open, a wider sound, the headphones seem to give a more detailed sound, slightly more crisp.

Yes - headphones for certain detail post-production work like noise reduction, fade in/out checks, setups, etc.

I always get the dynamics wrong (among other things) in the cans and I've got a couple of mid-grade sets - sony 7509 and Senn HD600 so the only other variables are headphone amp, talent, and ears. I'm still learning so I can fix the talent part to a point...

Yeah, Mr BLue Bear, one of the perennial questions that sprout like toadstools after a rain...
