Whats up,

please disregard the one in the mic forum, i mistakenly placed it there.

As of now, i have a $60 dollar no name microphone going straight into my 'mic in' on my sound card. i am using cool edit pro to record by the way.

Im thinking about getting one of those imitation shure 58's and a $150cdn pre amp. Which pre amp would you suggest for that price? And also, would I hear a big difference with the new set up compared to my current one?

thanks a lot, appreciate it.

Having a mic going into a sound card with no preamp sounds like ass. You need a preamp! I'd get an M-audio Audio Buddy. Yes it would be an improvement but it's not going to magically make your mic sound amazing.

im not using my current mic, im gonna get an imitation 58, would that be good?

thanks.

1st, what ambi-dextrous said is correct! Using a mic connected straight to a sound card will mos' def'ly sound like "stank p- - -y!"
2nd, why waste money on a imitation 58 (whatever the hell that is) when if U can save a few & put up a few mo' $$$, U can get a REAL one!
Try your best not to sacrifice quality by purchasing a unit that's only gonna' offer sub-standard performance!

heck you could even get a SM57 for under $75 brand new. It works well on just about anything. And I'm sure it would be a step up from what your using now...and yes the new pre will help too

57 is cheaper than the 58
SM58 is just a 57 with an added windscreen.
If you take off the windscreen you have yourself a 57.

ambi was actually originally short for ambition. I just use it for this board that's all, some old bboy thing i don't bother with anymore.

For preamps, I've been really happy with the Studio Projects VTB-1 (www.humbuckermusic.com) that I recently purchased. You can get one at www.humbuckermusic.com for $129 + shipping - which is a steal. It has a tube blend option that adds a nice amount of warmth and presence to vocals and guitar alike. I have read a lot of great reviews for this preamp and I've experienced it for myself enough to say that I agree with them.

Also, if you don't have a good compressor, I highly recommend the FMR RNC1773 unit (www.fmraudio.com). Once again, low cost and high quality. You can easily route it through the VTB-1 with a TRS cable.
